Here at the iPhone App Review, we like ourselves some quirk. We like it in our lives, we like it in our food, and we most certainly like it in our apps. As such, we’re more than tickled pink to be introducing you now to Cannibal Cookout, by developer MeYuMe. The app is simply one of the funnest games we’ve played on the iPhone in a long time, involving hilarious animations, challenging gameplay, and more than enough cooking action to last us through a mountain of commutes. For our full review of this iOS gem, don’t be afraid to head on down below the break!

Concept and Gameplay

The basic premise behind Cannibal Cookout is relatively simple: You play as a jungle-bound cannibal with a knack for keeping a giant pot hot and a need to eat the natives. The natives will waltz across the screen in the background, and it is then up to you to snag them and throw them into your cauldron. They’ll cook over time, and when you’ve acquired enough Hunger Points (earned by cooking the squatters) you’ll complete the level. That’s the basic idea, anyway, as the game adds an entire mountain of features and functions on top of this.

For instance, the later levels have you cooking specific recipes. To do this you’ll need to either buy ingredients or obtain them by racking your native food sources. You’ll also have to fend off the police, aliens, the army, angry birds, and all sorts of other monstrosities. And, of course, if you finish the level speedily and with a whole load of kills, you’ll get quite an impressive bonus to take back to the shop. All in all, it’s a monumental game that’s hectic, fun, and above all challenging!

Design and Graphics

One of the things we liked most about Cannibal Cookout is its look. The app sports a slightly retro animation and graphics set that positively sets us on fire (no pun intended). It reminded us of ye olden desktop titles like Grim Fandango. And with character animations that are downright funny—especially the police deaths, in our opinion—there are a lot of artsy elements to love in Cannibal Cookout. On the practical side of things, with so many items, recipes, and enemies to fight, the complexity will have you coming back for seconds.

Overall Value

However, perhaps the coolest thing about Cannibal Cookout is the price. The app is completely free in the App Store with the option to add in-app purchases later. However, we hardly found a need to. So with that in mind, the game is completely free, a blast to play, and an unbelievable bargain for any dedicated iOS gamer. If you like quirky titles, arcade games, or good graphics, Cannibal Cookout is a must-have!

Cannibal CookoutCannibal Cookout requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
