Brandnew Boy: iPhone App Written Review
We’re just going to come right out and say it: Brandnew Boy by developer Oozoo is one of the slickest, most inventive, and downright coolest action RPGs to hit the iPad and iPhone since we don’t know when. It’s got incredible graphics, intuitive controls, and a wealth of enemies to rock-and-sock your way through. Best of all, it’s currently on sale for only a dollar in the App Store, making it an unbelievable steal. If any of that sounds like a point of interest for you, then read on, Soldier! We’ve got the full review of this action-packed RPG right below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Brandnew Boy fits very squarely into the genre of action RPG. This means you’ll be enjoying all of the stock RPG faire that you’ve come to expect from the field. That includes leveling up, fighting mobs for coins and experience, and generally romping about the country side telling your enemies who’s boss. The game departs from the typical sandbox style trend that’s popular these days, however. Instead, it gives you specific levels to work through, as well as set missions for each. Sometimes you may be tackling a single bad boss. Or, you may need to kill a certain amount of enemies in a set time frame. Either way, you’ll be using the game’s incredible controls to deftly maneuver your character through the wild, whipping out special attacks, punching enemies to pieces, and otherwise learning to make it out of a fight alive.
The game comes with a variety of enemies to bash, as well as a surprisingly deep amount of powerups. Sure, the game is still button-mashing at its best, but with so many specials kept at the wing, we hardly cared. The game isn’t as item-based as most, though, so all of you World of Warcraft fanatics may find yourselves a bit displeased.
Graphics and Design
Have you seen Infinity Blade? Yeah, Brandnew Boy is on the same level as that now classic iPad title. The graphics are anime inspired and with a cell-shaded twist that absolutely shines on our iPad. The level of texture detail is incredible for iOS, and no matter what device you play it on, you’re guaranteed to come away impressed. Best of all, the environments are PlayStation 2 quality, at least in our eyes. And, if you’d like Game Center integration, you can have your cake and eat it too. Solid work, Lads! Brandnew Boy is a real shiner.
Currently Brandnew Boy is on sale for only a dollar in the App Store. That strikes us as an unbelievable bargain, but even at the standard price of $3.99 you’re getting a deal. In other words, if you like the genre and like incredible graphics for iOS, you’ve got nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain by giving Brandnew Boy a test drive. We guarantee it.
Brandnew Boy requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
