Torpedo Away!: iPhone Video App Review
Ever since my first game of Battle Ship as a young lass, I’ve been a bit obsessed with submarine warfare games. There’s something decidedly WWII about the latest sub war game to hit my desk, Torpedo Away! This addictive app comes to us from Fiddly Bits Software, and is available for download for free, as long as you don’t mind a little ad support. I think Torpedo Away! strikes a smart balance between supply and demand, and serves up some surprisingly addictive gameplay at the right price.
There’s no big storyline in place for the Torpedo Away! app. It’s simply a matter of shooting down enemy boats with a lone US Navy Gato class sub that you pilot via tilt controls. Each boat you take out is assigned a point value based on its passenger count and the subsequent drain on enemy moral you cause by downing it. You enter the water with 24 torpedoes at your disposal, so take aim with care. You’ll also contend with falling depth charges, so navigating the water while you fire is another important part of having a successful u-boat strategy.
The game comes to an end either when your sub runs out of health or your torpedoes have all been fired. Game Center integration puts your top scores on a global leader board for a little added competition, and there are also some unlockable achievements to aim for along the way.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had playing Torpedo Away! It is a pretty simple title, but it definitely pulls its weight, for a straightforward yet oddly addictive gaming experience.
Layout & Design:
The u-boat theme reigns supreme in the Torpedo Away! iPhone app. It’s also universal, as our video app review done on an iPad 2 may indicate, and looks great on either platform. That being said, there’s not a lot to the app. One main menu, and a single style game board, and that’s about all she wrote. Torpedo Away! would benefit greatly from a bit more variety, either by way of levels, unlockable scene changes or even by adding some boosts and new types of torpedoes. Just some thoughts on how to improve an app that’s already pretty darn good.
It’s hard to turn down a free app, so I highly suggest you don’t. If you’re looking for an easy pick-up style game with some competitive potential and neatly arranged gameplay, you’ve just found it. And it’s free! Torpedo Away! may not be the glossiest app I’ve seen lately, but it’s probably the one that I’ll play the longest, and that’s a true indication of value.
Torpedo Away! iPhone app requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
