Swipe Jump: iPhone App Written Review
What’s that we hear? You want more physics gaming on the iPhone? Really? Well, you’ve come to the right place then, you bucking bronco you! We’ve got one hot item ready to roll for you, in fact. Meet Swipe Jump by developer Jmay Live. The app offers us a unique mechanic that we haven’t previously seen in a physics game for the iPhone, as well as a wealth of levels and some interesting additions. It’s not quite perfect, but if you’re hankering for a free and stunning addition to your gaming repertoire, here it is! For our full review, head on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
Like all side-scrolling adventure games, the main goal of the app is to direct your jumping stickman from one end of the level to the next. Along the way, the player must collect coins, avoid obstacles, and jump over a whole lot of stuff. The way this is accomplished is certainly different for the genre. Rather than pressing a button to jump, the player swipes the screen to place a trampoline. The protagonist himself is never directly controlled, but rather guided through the courses. As he gathers additional items, new trampolines can be put down, rockets used to steer to safety, etc. One of the coolest things about the app is that in-game coins can be redeemed immediately for additional items. Need a rocket and have the cash? Go buy it and then get right back to playing!
Sadly, the controls aren’t quite what we’d hoped they’d be. The trampoline concept is unique, but timing it just right so that the character doesn’t plummet to his death is a work in progress. As neat as the control concept is, we can’t help feeling a simple jump button might have been better. Or even just a tap-to-place control scheme.
Design and Graphics
Thankfully, though, the app looks stunning on the iPhone. We loved the cartoony, cell-shaded graphics, as well as the bright colors and animations. As stated, we also greatly adored the option to buy in-game items while playing. And as the levels are brilliantly designed, we have no real complaints with the app’s looks and appeal. It’s a solid number, and it’s obvious the developers have thought a lot about how they want the app to look. Our hats off to you, mates.
And control issues aside, it’s really quite hard to argue with an app that has a free price tag. You can trade real cash for in-game green, but aside from that, Swipe Jump will not cost you a dime. That means that, if you’ve been waiting for a new physics game to give a go, you’re in luck. Swipe Jump is a solid offering with an incredible value that we hope will only continue to grow with time.
Swipe Jump requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
