Splash Math 3: Written iPhone App Review

Reviewed by Philip Chan

Developer StudyPad has produced a large number of popular math and education apps for the iOS. One of their recent releases is Splash Math 3, an educational app aimed at the third-grade audience. Collect all the Super-Splashes and other achievements with Super Crab through the 16 levels of Splash Math, available for iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone, running 3.0 or later.

Basically, Splash Math 3 features a load of different mini-quizzes over math topics aimed at third grade elementary students.  Scoring well on these quizzes allows the gamer to rack up points, which can then be spent in a virtual shop for fun items. Quizzes can be taken in practice mode, or actual “Play” mode, where the questions count and the students performance is recorded in the app. Each quiz can be set at a certain number of questions, different levels of difficulty, and different subjects inside math (multiplication, addition, time, money, metric measurements, etc). At its core, Splash Math 3 is a fun way to help your children practice math on the iOS. The quizzes feel like mini-games and are actually pretty fun, even for the review writer who’s been out of third grade for a long time now!

Graphical Layout:

Splash Math 3 looks fantastic on the iOS. I’ll admit though, it does lag a bit between transition screens on older models. There are a lot of cool animations that may make it perform slightly slower on prior generation Apple devices.  The graphics are sharp and crisp, with cute cartoon characters replete throughout the app. There is an under-the-sea theme throughout the app, with fish, submarines, crabs, treasure chests and more in Splash Math 3.

Educational Value:

Splash Math 3 sells for $4.99 through iTunes. It’s not cheap, but it’s a fairly decent price for a solid math practice app for third graders. Part of the draw of Splash Math 3 is the standardization of math levels across the different apps offered. This means that developer Study Pad has released a several math apps, each with a particular grade-school age in mind, and each (including Splash Math 3) is purportedly aligned with the state standards for the respective grade. I was impressed with the array of important math topics covered in Splash Math 3, including the all-important multiplication tables (so vital but sadly so often missed by some children), fractions, money, division and more. Furthermore, if you want to see your child’s overall progress, just tap on the handy Reports tab on the main screen. You’ll be presented with an extensive feedback page showing how well your child is doing in different areas of the app (addition, subtraction, etc). It’s a fairly comprehensive app when it comes to educational value and certainly one that will keep grade-school children coming back for more. One of my fond memories from elementary school was playing math games on the ancient computer in our classroom, scoring points and beating levels with math. Back then, apps like Splash Math 3 weren’t available; I can only imagine how much fun I would have had with such an app if it were available at the time. I heartily recommend Splash Math 3 as a great educational and entertainment tool for third-grade students, combing fun games, slick graphics and educational themes for a high educational value app package.

Splash Math 3 iPhone app requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
