Spanish Class: iPhone Video App Review
If you’re in the process of acquiring Spanish as a second language, this is the sort of app you want to put on your iPhone or iPad. Spanish Class comes to us courtesy of Ceardannan and serves as a low cost way to supplement your Spanish language acquisition through a series of vocab lists and spot-on tests.
Unlike a simple translation app, Spanish Class delivers tons of useful direct Spanish to English translations in addition to intelligently organized levels, exercises, Game Center integration and achievements.
All those tricks definitely help language learners. The reference material section of the app is broken up into vocabulary, verbs, grammar and useful phrases. The vocab section is pretty self-explanatory. You can use a predictive search feature to make the most of it. In the verbs section you gain easy access to every conjugation of tons of verbs. That’s awfully handy, and we’re particularly fond of the side-by-side comparisons. In the grammar section you’ll cover common Spanish grammar rules, and you can think of the useful phrases section as your own personal chit chat guide, perfect for everyone from the Spanish language student to the casual traveler.
And the exercises are sweet. They correct your incorrect answers on the spot, and even keep a history of your incorrect answers for easy review. Here’s where you’ll try to earn those sweet Game Center achievements and you can even see how you stack up to other users worldwide.
There is a really cool audio feature in this app, which costs an additional $.99 to unlock, but, trust us, it’s worth it. More about the app’s bottom line value after the cut.
Layout & Design:
Where most language apps are boring, Spanish Class is top notch. We love the app’s bright layout. It’s easy to use, and easy on the eyes. The words and exercises are logically divided, and features like the predictive search make finding what you want even easier. We’re big fans of how Spanish Class is laid out. Could the envelop have been pushed a little further? Always. The wrong answer dialog screen and the exercise reports could use a bit of finessing. But that doesn’t keep us from singing the app’s praises for all to hear.
At $1.99, we think Spanish Class is a steal. That’s much less then you’d spend on a Spanish language course, textbook or basic dictionary. As we mentioned earlier, there is an additional in-app feature to unlock, the listening option which includes readouts of the words. Even with that tucked into the price, Spanish Class is only going to cost you $2.99. Still a steal? You betcha.
Bottom line: if you are learning Spanish, you’ve gotta get this app. It’s well organized, thoughtfully executed, looks great and is going to help you hone your Spanish language skills in a snap.
Spanish Class iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
