Playground mini: iPhone App Written Review
When it comes to apps aimed at children on the iPhone and iPad, we’re kind of known for being picky. We see a lot of offerings in the genre here at the site, and as such, we consider ourselves a bit of connoisseurs where the market is considered. As such, may we now recommend to you one of our favorite new picks, Playground mini, by developer Jan Essig. The app offers a mountain of entertaining games and educational value at one of the lowest prices we’ve ever seen in the field. As such, it’s an incredible steal for the tech-oriented parent. If you’re curiosity has been piqued, you can check below beyond the break for our full review!
Concept and Functionality
When we talk about applications aimed at children on the iPhone or iPad, we tend to split these items up into two unique categories. Firstly, we have apps that attempt to serve as a physical book replacement. The other side of the coin focuses more on education through gameplay. If we had to pigeonhole Playground mini, we’d have to say it fits better into the latter category. However, the app is not all games and no education. The app’s 11—Yes, you saw that right! There are eleven unique mini-games here—all come with a wealth of brain-pumping potential. You’re child will be experiencing everything from playing the piano with cute critters to matching up puzzle pieces of adorable farm animals. Or, they’ll be able to catch animals of the same type, or possibly even match up like animals via a traditional memory game concept. And that’s just scratching the surface! All in all, Playground mini comes with an incredible amount of gameplay, and as each game emphasizes an important aspect of your child’s development (pattern recognition, item matching, color recognition, etc.) it’s an incredible value for the concerned parent.
Design and Graphics
When it comes to apps aimed at children, one of the first things we look for is an incredible set of graphics and artistry. Thankfully, Playground mini serves up the goods without missing a beat. The animals are all cute to a fault, and the interface itself is immaculate. We loved the sliding mechanic of the home screen, as well as the soft colors. Not to mention the fact that each of the included mini-games behaves flawlessly, without bugs, and with a unique dedication to small fingers and minds.
At the end of the day, Playground mini is perhaps one of the greatest values we’ve seen in the realm of educational applications in a long while. The app is cute, loaded with content, and brimming with educational impact. With all that in mind, the app earns a solid recommendation from us here at the iPhone App Review.
Playground mini requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
