MEmoticon: Written iPhone App Review
Want to take an ordinary emoticon and personalize it with your actual facial expression? The MEmoticon app from developer SurFace Apps Inc. allows you to do just that. Snap away and bare your individualistic emotions via your social networks. This app is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad. However, it does require iOS 5.0 or later.
Basically, this app allows you to take a normal, widely recognized computer generated emoticon and transform it into something more personal, like a snapshot of your face. You are first prompted with the “My MEmoticons” front, where 3 slots of colored faces are highlighted and you can select any of them to begin creating your own “MEmoticon”. However, if you have already created three and want to make more, you have to purchase more slots for an additional 99 cents per 3 more expressions. Each default “MEmoticon” has a specific expression, such as basic smiling, frowning, winking, and so on. There is a second menu tab which prompts you to take a photo of yourself with some vague and rather sketchy looking instructions. By selecting the camera icon, you then proceed to take a picture of your face. You need to position your device just right so that the app can generate the appropriate looking “MEmoticon” that reflects that specific expression that you selected. It will probably take you a few tries before you can get a decent and usable one. You can then choose to share it via social networking if you like. You can view all of your “MEmoticons” by returning to the “My MEmoticon” menu tab.
Appearance and Layout:
The appearance layout of MEmoticons is not very impressive. It definitely needs to be cleaned up a bit more and the navigating tools need some tweaking. The fonts and color schemes definitely do not appeal to the adult crowd, but would probably work just fine with a younger audience. It does take some maneuvering to figure out the next step, but after you do, the rest is a breeze, allowing you to send out your custom emoticons with ease.
For something that does not provide much entertainment or insight, this app ought to be offered for free. It is certainly an interesting concept, but I am not certain if it is interesting enough for users to actually want purchase it and proceed to make any use of it. If the appearance was amped up a bit and more functions and options were added, then this app would have more potential. Also, the idea of having to purchase more slots to create more emoticons is a bit absurd, for the price you pay upfront, the user should definitely at least have 5 slots for personalization. Overall, MEmoticon feels like an app based on a great, novel idea, but with some refining to the overall app needed.
MEmoticon iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
