iPractise English Grammar Test: Written iPhone App Review
Are you interested in a fun way to practice your English language skills on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad? If so, consider iPractise English Grammar from Globile. With a load of practice questions (1022 in all), three difficulty levels and covering a diverse set of subjects, iPractise English Grammar certainly offers some serious practice power for the ESL student.
Game play in iPractise English Grammar Test is pretty simple, yet fun. Load up the app, tap Play, select difficulty (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced), and select the level you want. Like most games on the iOS, you’ll have to beat each level first to unlock ‘em and advance on to the next. Each level consist of basic English phrases, of which you’ll need to select from multiple choice options to correctly complete each one. Some aren’t too hard, but even on the Beginner setting there are a few that will truly test your mastery of the English language and proper grammatical use of words. Getting to the next level requires you to answer at least 70% of the prior level’s questions correctly. Here’s a sample of the quizzes questions at Beginner level:
A: Are these your gloves?
Choices then consist of phrases that may be the proper way to answer the question posed.
Not only do you have to select the right answer, but there is also a Star system to score points with. You can earn all three stars (top marks) by selecting the right answer quickly, avoiding losing points by letting the timer run down or having to use the Hint feature. The timer is set at 30 seconds on Beginner level and the Hint option will narrow it down to two choices for you.
iPractise English Grammar Test offers a very useful Help section for users needing a little more assistance getting the hang of this app. Unfortunately, it is entirely in English, which isn’t too useful if your English skills are in need of a lot of practice in the first place. Offering a few different language help guides would probably be a good idea, hopefully a future update will have this. However, I think even those who pretty weak in ESL skills will still be able to understand this app very quickly. The overall layout is pretty standard for anyone used to iOS gaming apps and the quiz section seems fairly self-explanatory. The colors and design theme appear sharp, even on older devices and included sound effects are great too!
iPractise English Grammar Test describes itself as using questions prepared by two ESL educators and the quality of these certainly shows. I was impressed with the large number of questions available, 1022 in all, along with the level system and Game Center Achievements and Leaderboards. iPractise English Grammar Test, despite it’s odd spelling of “Practice”, feels like a very fun and interactive way to practice English skills, all from the comfort of the iOS. It’s also a relatively affordable English grammar app option, at only $1.99. Furthermore, the system requirements are pretty low, as it will run on devices running iOS 4.1 or later (great for older iPod Touch and iPhone model users). For those looking for a useful English grammar app, I would highly recommend iPractise English Grammar Test!
iPractise English Grammar Test iPhone app requires iOS 4.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
