GPS everyWhere + HUD Mode: iPhone Written App Review
This week I had the pleasure of reviewing an app for when you hit the road from Ynfo.Apps called GPS everyWhere + HUD Mode. The app name may be a mouthful, but the result is an app that gives you a ton of data in a streamlined format. It’s even on sale during an introductory period for $.99. Needless to say, I was pretty pumped to hit the road and take GPS everywhere + HUD Mode for a spin. Let’s see how it stacks up.
In a single glance, the GPS everywhere + HUD Mode iPhone app puts a ton of info at your fingertips. It displays your speed most prominently, in a circular UI that’s also a sleek compass. The single screen also sorts your average speed, latitude and longitude, altitude, time, temperature, humidity, wind info, and other weather conditions.
On top of all that, you can expand the bottom screen to make it include a map of your whereabouts, fueled by Google Maps. Needless to say, this app is pretty darn cool. And the addition of a heads-up display feature makes it even sweeter. A simple tap of your finger flips the info on the display. If you position your iPhone in your dash, the on-screen content becomes readable on your windshield. I was a skeptic, but after taking this baby for a drive, I’m a total convert.
Sure, I would be more impressed if the app somehow integrated those augmented reality proximity features we’ve seen in other apps, but, all in all, I was pretty darn pleased with the GPS everyWhere + HUD Mode app’s performance. Not only did all the info appear after mere moments of testing, it was pretty darn quick and accurate, too.
Layout & Design:
There are eight unique themes for the GPS everyWhere + HUD Mode app, and they all work in portrait and landscape mode. If you plan on using the HUD mode portion of the app, I highly recommend choosing one of the basic display themes, either green on black, red on black or blue on black. In my opinion those are the ones that show up the best in my windshield, but make your own decision.
The fact that the app offers some variety despite its utilitarian functions is impressive. Sure, there’s nothing over the top about this app’s design, but it works well and is easy to see while maintaining some semblance of style. That’s no small feat.
GPS everyWhere + HUD Mode is currently on sale for $.99, which the description says is 70 percent off the app’s normal price. If you travel a lot or have been looking for a driving companion app to give you details your car doesn’t, this is a no brainer. Get the app, hit the road and never look back.
Something to keep in mind: this app is at the mercy of your data connection and your iPhone’s ability to track GPS. While I didn’t notice any bad battery drain symptoms, nasty weather may interfere, so just don’t be surprised if it doesn’t always work perfectly in a bad storm.
GPS everyWhere + HUD Mode iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
