CallmyName: iPhone Video App Review
We’ve all been there. You’re trying to write down a phone number from a truck, billboard, TV show, whatever, and before you can get it down, it’s out of sight. But what if getting in touch with the number was much easier. What if all you had to do was remember a name? The new CallmyName iPhone app from NTTM Limited is poised to do for phone numbers what QR codes did for Web addresses: make them much easier to access and manage. But how does the service stack up? Check out our iPhone app review of CallmyName for a closer look.
With the CallmyName app and service, you can reach out to people via their c: name. To translate, a c: name is a name set up by the owner of a telephone number to represent that number. Instead of dialing all ten or even seven digits of a phone number, you can use the CallmyName iPhone app to call the much more easily remembered c: name. The app reaches out to the CallmyName server, which identifies the c: name as a certain number, and routes you to the number without ever having to dial a single digit. It’s a pretty smart idea.
The app also accesses your contacts, so it’s very easy to make regular calls as well. You can save c: contacts as favorites for easy access, and the app even keeps track of your recent calls in the dialer and recent tabs.
One of the first things the CallmyName app suggests you do is set up your very own call name, which seems like the logical thing to do. Unfortunately, this feature just doesn’t work. You can fill out the form to create a c: name, but the text message with a confirmation number never comes. This was tested across multiple devices including the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and even on an Android device (there’s a separate Android app for this service, which would be handy, if it worked). Not a single one of the testers received their registration text, so we were at a bit of a standstill.
The app still worked to make regular phone calls, but the novelty and convenience of using a call name was undone. How unfortunate.
Layout & Design:
Design-wise, the CallmyName iPhone app is quite nicely made. The color combinations are clear and make it easy to see all your options, contacts, call records, favorites and settings. We’re particularly fond of the settings menu. From here, not only are you able to tell others about the app, adjust your location, change the language settings and toggle other features on and off, you can access the extremely thorough help section of the app. We wish each page had a link to this help section, it would be a vast improvement over scrolling to the bottom of a settings page for it.
In the help section you’ll find a smart intro video to the app (why weren’t we shown this upfront?), and a thorough FAQ section about making the most of the app. It’s quite well made and laid out.
We were pretty excited about the idea behind the CallmyName iPhone app. With the right kind of support and global partners this could really change how people get in touch, and that’s something special. Unfortunately it just doesn’t work yet. When it is up and running, the app is free, which will be a great value. We’re looking forward to the day it is and when businesses start adopting this savvy dialer platform.
CallmyName iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
