APPeticiousBugs: iPhone App Video Review
When’s the last time you thought about eating bugs? If you’re from the West, it was likely a long, long time ago, almost certainly when you were a kid—and likely then in some sort of Sandlot style scenario. However, there are certain cultures the world over that delight in the consumption of insects: It is, in fact, a staple in most Eastern countries. As such, we’re delighted to bring to you now one of the coolest apps to grace our desk in a while, APPeticiousBugs by developer Cloud in Touch Labs. The app makes it quick and easy to discover new bug-based recipes, information, and even nutritional facts. If you at all have an interest in broadening your evening menu, there’s no better place to start than below the break with our full review of APPeticiousBugs!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, APPeticiousBugs serves first and foremost as a compendium of bug and cuisine related information, bringing you data on a variety of recipes for you to create. In fact, most of them are quite simple to fashion, if you haven’t got a particular knack for cooking. This first section, recipes, has even been divided into further subsections for convenience. Among these are sauces, soups, desserts, entrees, etc. If you’d like to know a bit more, though, you can easily slide the app to the right to the Curiosities pane. This includes information on the seasonality of various insects, in case you were looking for a specific strain. You’ll also find nutritional facts here, too: If you were unaware of the fact, insects can be quite good for the body. Additionally, the app also offers a quick store locater in your area, as well as an extensive bibliography. All in all, if you’re feeling the hankering for some insects in your daily cuisine, there’s really no better way to get started than with APPeticiousBugs.
Design and Layout
Best of all, APPeticiousBugs looks pretty great on the iPhone, too. The app’s sprightly green and white graphics add a much-needed amount of levity to what is most certainly a freaky recipe course for most Western readers. Also, you’ll not find any photos of insects here to throw you off. Rather, the app sticks to traditional recipe giving, as we’d prefer it to. We also greatly appreciated the store locator, which makes it incredibly simple to find your nearest insect dealer. All in all, it’s a top-notch design, though we would have liked even more recipes! Hopefully, however, more are on their way in new updates.
As stated, we honestly can’t think of a better way to dip your toe in the water where eating bugs is concerned. For the dollar the app costs, you’ll get a wealth of information and statistics, making it an incredible value for the adventurous eater. And no matter how much you actually cook with the app, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth.
APPeticiousBugs requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
