Sky Strike: iPhone Written App Review
Line drawing games are a unique breed. The latest one to hit our desks here at The iPhone App Review is a polished title from PTK Learning Ltd called Sky Strike. This game combines the excitement of a war-themed game and the spatial reasoning required by the most stringent of line drawing games out there. The results are pretty awesome.
In Sky Strike you’ll guide missiles to defend an air base with a simple swipe of your finger. The missiles will follow your trajectory, but the planes won’t always comply. There are enemy aircraft coming in, and there are tons of them. There are five main levels to this game, and they’re all designed quite differently, with multiple runways and helipads, so there’s never a dull moment in Sky Strike, and we like it that way.
We thought this game would be child’s play, but thanks to some creative and strategic work on the part of the developer, this game is anything but easy. To clarify, it’s easy to learn how to play, but mastering the game is going to take some time and practice, and you’re going to love every moment of the process. And, if you think it’s getting too easy (which won’t be for a while, trust us) the game supports two speeds right from the level. Go ahead, if you think you’re all that, give it a try.
It also integrates with Open Feint, so in addition to going out for level medals and trying to beat your own high scores you can compete on a global level for game domination.
Layout & Design:
The game layout in Sky Strike integrates perfectly with the war-time theme, from the utilitarian UI to the game’s explosive soundboard. As you progress through Sky Strike the levels will get more difficult, and begin including smart design features like cloud cover and cities to make navigating your missiles more difficult. We do wish there was a bit more variety in the type of scene. Maybe it can expand to include globally recognized hot spots like Rio or Hong Kong. That would add some visual interest to the app in an instant.
As a result, the app’s graphics are simple, yet have a certain gritty appeal that lends itself to the air warfare theme quite nicely.
Line drawing apps can be difficult to master, but not because of any functionality issues in this case. Sky Strike has a true reading on your fingers and their motion. Sometimes it almost seems too accurate and we wish our lines were a bit straighter, but that’s not the app’s problem. Once or twice we experienced a lack of responsiveness from a missile silo when attempting to create a new shot, but it was a busy board and that may have just been a game restriction. All in all, no serious functionality issues here. The app is solid.
Sky Strike has the potential to give players hours of fun and it will only get better as the levels expand. It’s challenging and interesting enough to hold your attention and give your gaming skills a run for their money. At $.99 we think this app is a great value for anyone who loves war strategy games or the line drawing genre in general.
Sky Strike iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
