Scary Mirror: Written iPhone App Review

Ever wanted to play an epic practical joke on your friends with your iOS device, but couldn’t thing of a solid app for doing it just right? Now you can with Scary Mirror, a creepy mirror app, from BidHobby. It’s a great prank app to fool your friends with, for only $0.99 through iTunes.

Imagine this: your buddy asks to borrow your iPhone mirror app to check out his new hairdo. You quickly activate a prank mirror app, hand him your iOS device, and proceed to scare the living heebeejeebees out of him. Great success! That’s the basic idea behind Scary Mirror app and it handles this well. In a nutshell, Scary Mirror allows you to use your iPhone like a real mirror. However, with a tap of your finger, you can turn Scary Mirrorr into a truly frightening mirror app. Random creepy faces will pop into the mirror view, right as your friend is concentrating most on checking his teeth for extra letture or hair for lose curls. You can select from a regular mirror (no pranks with scary faces), or the joke mirror after booting up the app. Both mirrors activate the front facing camera on the iOS device and show a video image of the user as a virtual “mirror” on screen. It’s worth noting that this app is not a good one to use in a quiet, public area, as the app cannot be muted (adding to the scare feature).

Overall, Scary Mirror is a pretty simplistic app, layout wise. Once the mirror feature is activated (joke or normal mirror), a stylized mirror appeals on screen. The iPhone’s screen facing camera is then activated, showing an image of the user on the screen (basically, webcam-style). However, a creepy image will pop up on the mirror, overlaying the subjects face for a fun fear effect. The scary images are relatively generic but still frightening for first time users (along with loud sound effects). There are only 2 “free” images included in the app, but users can access more scary images to scare their friends with through the in-game app store. It’s pretty easy to navigate the app, as there really aren’t too many confusing options. For a quick trailer from BidHobby for Scary Mirror, check out their YouTube intro for the app!

Scary Mirror sells for $0.99 on the iTunes app store. It’s certainly not much, but the overall app feature only includes two scary images, with the option for purchasing more through the app. I’d prefer it if the app itself was free, with additional purchases available for more images, but it’s not too steep a price for a few fun thrills at your friend’s expense. Scary Mirror runs well, is very simple to navigate and offers some quick practical jokes for iOS users. It’s worth checking out, especially if you need a solid April Fool’s Day app!

Scary Mirrow iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
