PowerSchool for Parents: iPhone App Video Review
In our eyes, one of the coolest things about iOS is its nearly unlimited potential to enrich our lives. With every passing day it seems like some developer has come up with yet another way in which our iPhone’s can compliment and enhance our lifestyles. And though we aren’t parents of the appropriate age, we still greatly respect what PowerSchool for Parents, by developer Pearson School Systems is doing for the concerned mother or father out there. The app makes it unbelievably easy to log-in and take a glance at your child’s behavior, grades, transaction, and even schedule. All in all, it’s an unbelievably cool way to stay on top of your student’s education, and all from the security of your iPhone.
Concept and Functionality
As stated, PowerSchool for Parents serves as a one-stop application for all PowerSchool-enabled school districts. Each parent (There’s also a Student app for the pupils themselves to use!) is given their own log-in details, allowing them to first search for their school district by zip code, and then access their personal files directly. These files contain a nearly endless amount of information about each of their children enrolled in the district. This information is comprised of grades, attendance, transactions (such as lunch fees and fines, etc.) schedules, even minute details like daily quizzes and homework. All of this can be observed directly inside the application, and in a way that’s so fluid as to be unreal. However, what we really liked most was the ability teacher’s have through PowerSchool to talk to the student’s parents. Teachers are free to leave notes on any report, allowing the parent to gain a first-hand look at their child’s performance in the class room. This is a great way to encourage parent-child interactivity, and we can’t get enough of it.
Design and Layout
From a purely design and aesthetics perspective, it’s obvious that a lot of attention has been paid to the app’s ease-of-use. As such, we had no problems at all perusing the information we wanted, or even setting the app up for our test-flight school district. Navigation required no strenuous finagling, and we were able to load each report, grade, homework assignment, and student overview without fuss. All in all, for the concerned parent who doesn’t want an hassle every time they’d like to check on their child, PowerSchool for Parents is an ideal way to do so.
Best of all, PowerSchool for Parents is a free app in the AppStore, making it an incredible bargain for the PowerSchool-enabled district. Sadly, there were no districts with PowerSchool support in our area (Denver metropolitan) but the developer claims more than 10 million students are attached to the system. With the quality offered here, we can only hope the system takes further root and expands, as we’re enamored with the functionality. If you’re a PowerSchool user, you need this app for your iPhone. Period.
PowerSchool requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
