Plugglz: iPhone App Written Review
If you heaven’t heard us say it before, we’re absolutely mad about puzzle games on the iPhone. There’s just something about wracking our brains in front of a complex and stupefying set of pixels that gets our blood pumping. As such, we’d simply like to pass along our new favorite find, Plugglz by developer Fruitservice. The app offers a uniquely challenging and charming game concept that takes only seconds to learn, but potentially many handfuls of hours to master. In other words, if you’ve been looking for a cheap and incredible way to flex your brain muscles during the morning commute, you may have just found your new best mate.
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Plugglz is an iPhone puzzler in every possible classic sense of the word. The app’s specific game mechanic is rather unique, however, or at the very least, we haven’t seen it elsewhere in the App Store before. The idea is relatively simple: Users must connect a variety of multi-colored plugs, which have been scattered about the game board. Like-colored plugs cannot be added together, while only plugs with stems that match other plugs’ receptors will work, too. The player must work feverishly to combine these in a way that makes full available use of the connecting ports. It can be a real brain-bender, especially when the app throws out several dozen of the little buggers, all of which have unique shapes—or worse, nearly identical ones. As mentioned earlier, it’s a concept that can take only seconds to learn, but we haven’t yet felt comfortable with saying we’ve mastered it.
Design and Graphics
Another notch in the app’s favor is its excellent, hand-drawn graphics set. The title has been made out to look like a notebook, complete with sketched lines and margins just ripe for taking notes in. The plugs themselves are very clear, which may seem like an odd point: However, knowing exactly where the connectors are is a tremendous boon, and alleviates some of the puzzle-induced stress. We do lament the absence of Game Center integration, though, as we would have loved to challenge other players with our high scores, or even just earn achievements for all our hard work. That being said, the atmosphere is spot on, and we absolutely loved the feel of the app.
We’ll spin it to you this way: Plugglz is completely free in the App Store, and for that low price, you’ll get access to a whopping 20 levels. If you’d like more, it’s only another dollar to unlock 70 additional—and more sophisticated—stages. All in all, that makes the app one of the best priced puzzlers currently available for the platform, and a real bargain, to boot.
Plugglz requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
