EarlyMath: iPhone Video App Review
In the past few years we’ve seen a lot of really great educational apps here at The iPhone App Review. Today we found a new favorite, the EarlyMath iPhone app from ChildUp Ltd. This application teaches and reinforces essential math skills for early learners but it’s so much more than that, as our iPhone app review will show.
The ChildUp learning method is a hands-on, parent-driven approach to learning numbers with amazing results. EarlyMath is just one of the apps available in this series, and right now it’s entirely free. So if you have young children (the app is recommended for kids ages 1 – 5) we suggest going to your iPhone or iPad and downloading it now. Don’t worry, this review will be here when you get back. We’ll wait.
Okay, got it? Good.
EarlyMath uses audible, visual and physical engagement to make learning numbers easy and interesting for children. The app uses fun, repetitive animal characters for counting exercises. Each animal makes a unique sound, and there’s even a section of the app where you can read about each animal with your child and learn their sounds together.
Together is an operative word in this app. There are three different types of number learning exercises in EarlyMath. Each one of them has an option to include your own voice in the process, counting numbers, cheering kids on and gently nudging them in the right direction if they get a question wrong.
For parents, the EarlyMath app includes some great articles about the ChildUp method, how children learn and the roles they play in learning success. This app is seriously well rounded, thorough and just plain amazing. If it had a reporting option for when and if your child plays with the app alone we’d like it, but the idea is to engage with your child as they learn, so we understand the omission.
Layout & Design:
EarlyMath is a universal app, so while it works well and is easily navigated on the iPhone, we think it really shines on the iPad’s larger screen real estate where little fingers can rove with a bit more freedom.
The app itself is bright and cheerful, with a peppy soundboard and navigation that will be easy on parents and kids alike. No, each animal isn’t a mind blowing 3D rendition, but the simple cartoon-style graphics are entirely kid-friendly and pleasant. We don’t have a problem with them.
Did we mention EarlyMath is free right now? Because it is. There is an option to unlock 40 addition animals for the app, which costs $.99, and we highly recommend doing so. Even with that small in-app purchase, this app is such an insane value it’s almost hard to understand. We are blown away by EarlyMath’s educational approach, multifaceted learning options and killer price tag. This, my friends, is what we parents call a slam dunk. Get it now, you won’t regret it.
EarlyMath iPhone app requires iOS 3.1.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
