Create My Own Flash Cards: iPhone App Video Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we tend to see a whole lot of applications aimed at the early learning stages. Most of these, however, tend to take the form of eBooks or mini-games. As such, it’s rare to see an application like Create My Own Flash Cards, by developer Fun to Learn Apps. Instead of baring down on the young tyke with a flurry of educational mini-games, the app instead offers a unique way for babies to acquire words very early in their development. It makes it simple and quick for parents to add audio-based cards with pictures of objects in their child’s daily life. It’s a brilliant idea, and for our full thoughts on this app aimed at infants, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, Create My Own Flash Cards takes a unique approach to applications aimed at children, skipping the eBook fad to instead focus on a more flashcard oriented affair. The app allows parents to create customized cards with photos of objects commonly seen by the infant during their daily life. These photos can be added from either the Photo Gallery or the iPhone’s camera itself. Once appended, it’s another button press to add text alongside the photo to identify it. From there, one more button adds a full audio reading of the text, as provided by the parent. The end result is a card that can be tapped to be read aloud, solidifying the name of the object with the photo of it. This helps to encourage language acquisition, and is a tremendous way to go about it. Not only is the child hearing the word read aloud, but also, it’s said in the parent’s voice. Both of these are tremendously important in a child’s growth, and we can’t applaud the developers enough for structuring it this way.
Design and Layout
Equally as impressive is the app’s layout. It’s unbelievably simple to create cards, and as it’s more or less a three button process, it can be done rapidly, as well. Parents will have no trouble organizing and creating items for their child to use, and considering a simple tap will produce an audible reading, even small infants can play with the app. We also appreciated the child lock on card construction at the home page. This was a particularly efficient way to ensure the child doesn’t accidentally delete all of the added content.
Considering Create My Own Flash Cards costs only $0.99 in the App Store, we can hardly think of a good reason not to give it a go. It’s unbelievably simple to use, incredibly effective, and a brilliant way to encourage your child’s growth from the very beginning. And if that’s not a glowing recommendation, we don’t know what is! Our hats off to you, lads.
Create My Own Flash Cards requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
