Australia Unlimited: iPad Written App Review
Around the world Australians appear at the forefront of culture, art, technology and academia. The new Australia Unlimited digital magazine highlights news of Australian achievements, both at home and abroad, and highlights how the folks from down under are changing the world. The magazine is from Hardie Grant Publishing, and illustrates the important role Australians play in our advancing world culture. Best of all, this beautiful app is entirely free. Interested? You should be.
First and foremost, Australia Unlimited is a free monthly digital magazine. It appears in your newsstand, so don’t be surprised when you don’t see it on your app pages. Just tap the newsstand icon and it will be right there on your shelf waiting for you.
The content in this magazine is top notch, well researched and eloquently written in long-form magazine feature style. Not to mention, it’s just plain intriguing. From insights into the way an Australian not-for-profit is making a difference for small businesses around the world to the latest tech ventures of Silicone Valley Australians, this publication pops with hot button topics and a wide range of appeal.
And then there are the multimedia aspects of the app, which, frankly, deserve a subheading of their own. There are embedded videos and photo slideshows throughout the app. We’re talking high quality artwork here folks, professionally cultivated and simply stunning. There’s also some killer design work, but more about that after the cut.
It also works as a functional magazine quite well, with an easy access table of contents, a bookmarking system and integrated social networking share options. This, dear readers, is what we call a home run.
Layout & Design:
As promised, here’s some insight into Australia Unlimited’s design work. It’s smart, often supplementing the vertical flow of longer articles. Media is definitely put to good use in this app. It’s also laid out much like a traditional magazine, with sleek visual interest from the photo-laden table of contents to the standout quotes featured throughout the mag.
Navigation is pretty simple. You’ll scroll left and right to move between stories, and scroll up and down to access longer works. It sounds good, but in reality it’s a little buggy. It’s too easy to accidentally scroll down when you’re trying to scroll side to side.
The Australia Unlimited iPad app for newsstand captures the verve of Australian game changers in a way that appeals to the masses. Anyone interested in forward thinking or the latest technology will enjoy this publication. It’s an engaging app from cover to cover. The content is superb and the elegant design is eye catching. Let’s not forget that it’s entirely free. Call that a bit of good will from Australia. Download Australia Unlimited. You’ll be glad you did.
Australia Unlimited iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
