Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader: iPhone Written App Review
Ahh, the bathroom book. At some point in your life, you’re going to visit the porcelain throne and find yourself searching for reading material. The Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader iPhone app can make that search easier, no matter where you are when nature calls. This riotous reader from Portable Press contains some of the best gems from the Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader book collection and website, so you can rest assured these fast facts, quotes and useless bits of information are road tested for optimal diversion.
Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader is broken into four main parts. The daily facts section allows you to scroll through a robust roll of random facts, updated daily. An integrated push notification feature will actually alert you when the app receives its new round of daily facts. Feel free to peruse them at your leisure, whether you’re on the pot or not.
The articles selection contains items in a slightly longer form, and plenty of them. This is some seriously random stuff, from Hoover’s hatred of cats to a breakdown of common jargon words you may find surprising. This section, and the app’s others, support adding favorites and an awesome search feature that makes it easy to unearth interesting tidbits of data by any word mentioned in an entry.
There’s also a blog section which contains highlights from the Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader online blog, and is updated pretty frequently with news, the bizarre, the beautiful and everything in between. Then we come to the fourth and final section of this app, which also happens to be my favorite. In the “Fun” section a bright yellow duck dressed up like Elvis sits just waiting to be pinched. This is a perfectly juvenile, nonsensical touch, and it makes fart noises. Hilarity ensues.
Layout & Design:
We didn’t promise anything highbrow here in our app review of Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, but it does manage to hold its own design-wise. Not only is it easy to navigate, add favorites and do comprehensive searches with the app, it’s also universal. Quirky touches like a flush sound intro and toilet paper motif keep this app interesting, simple and spot on. We highly approve of its style and the app’s clear mission to delivering random information to folks all over the place in a highly efficient manner.
A Kindle version of a single Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader volume could cost you upwards of $10, whereas this hot little number can be yours for a mere $1.99. We think this app’s hilarious, and a great way to make sure you never get caught without reading materials and your pants at the same time. If you have a great sense of humor, a healthy curiosity or are just sick of resorting to your mom’s Redbook for toilet reading, this is your app. Go get it.
Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader iPhone app requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
