Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off: iPhone App Video Review
We see a lot of educational apps for children here at the iPhone App Review, but rare is the official tie-in from a pre-existing children’s franchise—much less a good one! With that in mind, we’re pleased to recommend to you now the brilliantly designed and wonderfully entertaining Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off, by developer Watch More TV Interactive. The app is a near perfect compliment to the Franklin franchise, offering a unique way for your children to play with and experience the characters they already know and love on either the iPhone or iPad. For our full thoughts on this children’s mini-game, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Gameplay
We would call Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off a game for children, but to be fair, it’s really rather more of a mini-game, though one that’s been fleshed out to offer a bit more meat than a simple, skimpy title. In-app, Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off has your child choosing one of six carts related to characters in the franchise, and then racing that cart against another character. The cart is directed using the directional controls along the left side of the screen, as well as the jump button on the right. The goal is to reach the finish line first, scoring as many points as possible by obtaining speed boosts, jumping puddles, looping through the loop-de-loops, etc. It’s a fun concept, and at times, it can actually be quite challenging. All in all, there are 10 included levels to race through, though they did tend to run together in our minds after a while.
In addition, your child can also save their own races for playback later, via the main menu. We loved this functionality, especially as the videos can be uploaded to Franklin’s Treehouse TV for other children to view. Kids love this sort of attention, and its a brilliant addition.
Graphics and Design
In addition to offering world-class gameplay, Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off also looks fantastic on the iPhone’s Retina display: The app is universal, and is also available on the iPad, where it looks equally as great. Either way, the characters your children know have all been ported with grace, and the controls themselves operated fantastically. However, we do wonder what age group of child might have problems using the controls, or even finishing the races. At times, they could be quite difficult, and we wonder if some frustrations might surface because of an age difference between child and game.
At the end of the day, though, Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off is an incredible bargain at only $1.99 in the App Store. If your child is a fan of Franklin’s, or you’d just like to give your little tyke an iPhone app of their own, it’s a tremendous steal, and one we feel will keep your little loved one entertained from here until the cows come home. All in all, it’s a solid recommendation for Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off.
Franklin’s Bumpy Buggy Race-Off requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
