Elliana: iPad Written App Review
Ebooks like Elliana remind us just how magical the iPad can be. This darling tale of curiosity, adventure and color from PLUBSTUDIO is a showcase of all things that make us love eBook apps: brilliant artwork, engaging, original stories and fun extras that bring a sparkle to children’s eyes every time they open the app. If your family is looking for a new story, our iPad app review of Elliana may be just what you’re looking for.
Elliana is the story of one little girl’s quest to find her family, with the help of a motley crew of new animal friends. This original story is full of action and spunk. We’ve rarely seen another iPad eBook app with a better tale, and that’s saying something.
Elliana and her friends come to life through the app’s beautifully drawn scenes. Fun animations and games are peppered throughout the story, making it even more engaging. If your little one just wants to read about Elliana they can, by entering the app’s reading mode, but we are desperately fond of the story’s talented reader, puzzles and interactive pictures and suggest enjoying it both ways.
There’s also a neat sticker page interface in the Elliana iPad app, linked to a service called Decomates. The app comes with several sticker sheets your kids can customize and arrange. There’s even an Elliana-themed one that ties in quite nicely to the story.
We do think the Elliana app could be slightly improved if it included a record-me feature or had more educational support, such as definitions and vowel recognition like we’ve seen in other eBook apps. But as a story, this app is tops.
Layout & Design:
We’ve already had a bit of a gush about Elliana’s illustrations, but it’s worth a second mention. The characters in this eBook are beautifully rendered, and the extras are easily identified thanks to a super kid-friendly user interface. There are even hidden animated surprises throughout the book, so kids can have a blast tapping each scene looking for those neat touches.
While the story itself is extremely kid-friendly, we do want to caution readers about the sticker page interface. There is a shop button in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen that leads users out of the app and to a sticker sheet sales page. Otherwise Elliana is wonderful. There are no advertisements, no sales pitches and nothing else inappropriate for children. If not for the sticker shop link we’d give this app top marks.
Occasionally the Elliana app gets stuck reading the text of a page even if you’ve moved on to the next, especially if you’ve asked the app to repeat the reading of it. We found it best to let the recording play, then go back a page and try again. Otherwise the Elliana iPad app works quite well.
At just $2.99, there’s no reason to skip Elliana. Gobble up this app, tuck it in your iPad book folder, and don’t look back. Readers young and old will appreciate the story here, though we think it may be particularly attractive to readers ages 10-years-old and younger.
Elliana iPhone app requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
