XnView Mobile FX: iPad App Written Review
It seems like we’re always using an unnecessary number of photography applications on our iDevices. We hate doing so, but there’s simply no other alternative: With one app covering effects, another shooting, etc. it quickly becomes a herculean headache. However, there is a solution, and its name is XnView Mobile FX, by the developer Gougelet Pierre. The app brings an incredible amount of photo editing functionality to our shores, including a mountain of filters, easy to fit frames, and quick exporting options. All in all, it’s possible that XnView Mobile FX is the definitive word in the realm of iOS photo-editing: For our final judgement, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
The stellar XnView Mobile FX experience first begins with the apps killer interface, which comes loaded with several stock photographs for you to play with. However, loading your own photos requires only a simple click. From there, the user is immediately launched into a world of photography effects that can be both invigorating and headache inducing. We don’t get to say this often, but XnView Mobile FX literally comes with so many effects and customization options that it could take hours to fully learn them all. To begin with, there’s basic correctional controls, such as mirroring, straightening, cropping, and rotating your photos. Once that’s done, you’re then free to dive into color correction parameters, such as gamma, hue, and balance—not to mention color effects like greyscale and sepia. Immediately after, a world of photo effects, light simulations, borders, frames and stylizations opens up, creating a nearly infinite number of combinations to give your photo that perfectly vintage, or ultimately modern look. There’s even selection tools to change the medium appearance of your photo, adding a sketched, painted, or stretched look into the mix, should you desire it. And when a photo is finished, it’s only a few steps away from being live on Flickr or Facebook.
Design and Interface
Even better than the app’s sheer amount of functionality, though, is its ultra streamlined interface. The app puts the attention on your photos, as it should be. This is accomplished by relegating the various effects and editing tools to drop-down menus that can easily be found along the top of the application. The rest of the space is devoted solely to your photo, allowing you to really analyze its appearance, and better perfect the end result. Exporting options are also only a click away at the top, making it a smooth transition from iPad to Internet.
Miraculously, XnView Mobile FX is even free in the App Store. If you’re an iPhotographer, or just a fan of photography, you really owe it to yourself to try XnView Mobile FX. The app is a gem in a dustheap, and we can’t think of a better way to edit your photos from your iPad: Period.
XnView Mobile FX requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
