Whiteboard Photo+: iPhone App Written Review
Most businesses these days have moved beyond paper and pencil, saving thousands of trees a year in the rain forests, as well as saving you the hassle of having to organize that whole mess. However, whiteboards are still a dime a dozen, and if you’re one of those forward thinking people who like to use your iPhone and iPad for everything, these archaic felt marker compendiums can be a real headache. That being said, Whiteboard Photo+, by developer Individual Studios, makes the transition from old to new a little easier, thanks to its stellar photo cleaning software. For our full thoughts on this meeting saving application, check below beyond the break (or go here for a YouTube sneak peek)!
Concept and Functionality
In much the same way that many document scanners for the iPhone help you clean up a picture snapped of a text page, so does Whiteboard Photo+ help you turn blurry images of messy whiteboards into clean, pristine, and readable digital files. Essentially, the app works like this:
Let’s say the user is in an office meeting, and once all the proceedings have come to a close, he snaps a picture of the whiteboard. He then loads the photo into Whiteboard Photo+ directly in-app. From here, he’s presented with a scrollbar that adjusts the contrast of the image until the handwritten, marker notes shine like they’ve been scrawled on a Smart Board. Once the image has been scrubbed, he can even send it via eMail to himself, or to others, or even cache it to the Photo Gallery.
All in all, it’s a smoothly functional experience, and though it may sound deceptively simple, it’s really quite useful. It’s a bloody quick way to modernize a ubiquitous form of mind mapping, and we couldn’t be happier with the app’s performance.
Design and Layout
The design itself is very simple, as well, lending itself to speedy revisions of stored images. However, we did find ourselves pining for a little more integration with the cloud. There’s currently no way to export your fixed photographs to places like DropBox, or our beloved Evernote, which means our route to paperless freedom is not yet complete. To store a photo to such a service with Whiteboard Photo+, the user must first cache the image to the iPhone itself, and then load it onto a cloud storage service. Thankfully, the developers have mentioned this functionality is coming in future updates, and the existing export functions are still ace. The app makes it simple to post your pictures to eMail, or preserve them in high-definition .PDF-formatting.
That being said, it’s very hard to argue with the price tag that comes along with Whiteboard Photo+: The app is completely free in the App Store, making it a stupendous value for any concerned businessman. If you deal with whiteboards day in and day out, Whiteboard Photo+ is a quick way to take your meeting notes with you, and it might just save you a boat load of man hours. All in all, the app earns a full four stars, as well as a recommendation.
Whiteboard Photo+ requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
