Trashers: iPhone App Written Review

As professional app reviewers, we’re always looking for titles that perfectly mix an entire menagerie of influences into new and inventive packages. This is often much harder to execute than it sounds, which is why apps like Trashers, by developer RGH Games, are such incredible gems. The app draws on everything from Pac Man to Ghostbusters, combining it all into one engaging title for the iPhone and iPad. Best of all, the price is right, as Trashers won’t cost you a dime to try out! For our full thoughts on this gooey masterpiece, check below beyond the break!

Concept and Gameplay

The story behind Trashers goes something like this: A pair of regular garbagemen are ready to start the day when something bloody unfortunate happens—the trash comes to life. These rubbish bin monsters begin terrorizing the town, and the duo takes it upon themselves to sort out the mess. The gameplay that’s birthed from this is a blissful combination of maze-navigation a la Pac Man, as well as Toon Town-esque turn-based combat. The player must direct the garbage truck through each level, collecting bins as they go along. These bins are used to reach a certain combat point, which can then be harnessed to tackle the nearest baddie. Combat itself swaps between defending your avatars against on coming garbage missiles, and swiping madly to inflict damage. It’s an eclectic mix, and one made all the more engaging by the inclusion of a trash sorting mini-game.

However, we are concerned about the app’s repetition. The same mechanic is used throughout, and though the story, enemies, and various new levels are more than enough to keep our interest, we did find ourselves pining for an upgrades system, or some way to level-up our characters.

Design and Graphics

We mentioned the old MMORPG Toon Town earlier, and we’d like to do so again here, as the graphics of Trashers bears a marked resemblance to the old desktop title. That isn’t to say the game doesn’t look good: In fact, we love the cartoony animation style. The characters are gorgeously illustrated, as are the enemies. Likewise, the environments are varied and lively, offering a unique feel with each and every new stage. We greatly appreciated this variety, especially in background, as it does a lot to keep the ball rolling, and avoid any repetitious experiences.

Overall Value

At the end of the day, Trashers is easily worth the time it takes to play, if for the gameplay alone. The app is brilliantly inventive, gorgeously drawn, and absolutely engaging. Best of all, the first three levels are free, with another 6 available for a scant two bucks total. All in all, the bargain pricing, superior gameplay, and hilarious storyline make Trashers a must-have on the iPad and iPhone, as well as one of our recommended games.

Trashers for iPhoneTrashers requires iOS 3.1.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
