TightWire Adventures: iPhone App Written Review
We’re absolute suckers for any game that heavily involves the accelerometer. There’s just something about tilting our iPhone about madly that really gets our goat. We have a feeling we aren’t alone in that, so with all due haste, here’s a stellar, gyrating title we’re just itching to recommend: TightWire Adventures by iBright Studios. The app offers a second round of the incredible original TightWire action, adding a boatload of new levels, as well as that unicycle we mentioned in the title. For our full thoughts on this gravity-defying game for the iPhone (and iPad) check below beyond the break!
Concept and Gameplay
The basic premise behind TightWire Adventures goes something like this: The players assumes the identity of a grossly obese protagonist, a portly man whose only goal in life is to cross a tightrope from one platform to another. To help him along, the player will need to tilt the iPhone forward in a sort of getup, as well as from side to side to prevent their digital avatar from falling over the edge. The farther forward the player goes, the faster the man walks—as well as the faster things go awry! All in all, it’s a very nerve-racking experience, and as the player is rewarded for finishing with speed, it’s one we’re particularly fond of.
That being said, we do worry about the app’s replay potential. The concept is a solid one, and though we greatly enjoyed TightWire Adventures, we did find the gameplay tiresome after only a few levels. The power-ups add a great deal to the mix, but still: With no level-ups or rewards, aside from Game Center achievements, we find it hard to stick with TightWire Adventures through all 15 included levels.
Design and Graphics
Our complaints aside, TightWire Adventures does look absolutely fantastic on the iPhone, and even better on the iPad. The levels themselves are well drawn, and the various crowds, circuses, and environmental elements keep the mix lively. Likewise, the menagerie of end zone dances and finish line parades the chubby protagonist puts on had us laughing often. On a similar note, we also appreciated the variation between walking and unicycling across each level. This is an improvement over the first title, and helps to add some additional flavor to each stage. All in all, TightWire Adventures is a vastly engaging and endlessly entertaining experience.
At the end of the day, TightWire Adventures will only cost you $0.99 to experience. At that price, the gameplay won’t break the bank, even if your attention may snap after an handful of levels. That being said, we’re still tremendous fans of the crazy, nerve-bending fun offered here, and if you’re into accelerometer controls, there’s no better title to satiate your craving than TightWire Adventures.
TightWire Adventures requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
