SetBreaker: iPhone App Written Review
We’re suckers for puzzle games. There’s just something about a good, hard mind melt that gets our gears going—and grinding! As such, the iPhone is one of our favorite devices, because it comes with so many brilliant titles in the genre. Chief among them is the stupefyingly good game SetBreaker, by the developer EZEZ Apps. The game puts you on your toes and then some, requiring all of your concentration and, in more cases than you might think, even your laughter. For our full thoughts on this unconventional puzzler for the iPhone, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Gameplay
The idea behind SetBreaker is most easily described using, believe it or not, Sesame Street. On the show, if your recall, there was a game called “One of These Things is Not Like the Other.” We loved this segment as children, and we’re happy to say that same adoration has made its way to SetBreaker. The app presents the user with a single clue tucked into the upper left corner. Then, the player is given a board of selections. The object of the game is to figure out the clue, analyze the various offerings, and then click the one that does not match the others. For example, a clue might hint that all the right answers are prime numbers. From there, the player would find the one response that is not a prime number. This sounds simple, but it doesn’t take long before the game starts hucking out hard-to-nail clues, or maddeningly confusing responses. It’s a wonderful mix, and one that will stretch your brain to its absolute limit.
Design and Graphics
That being said, we did find ourselves wanting just a bit more from the application. We mean this generally, as almost every aspect of this killer game mechanic could be fleshed out. We’d love to see the addition of some power-ups, or a more intense online multiplayer. Better yet, we’d love to have an online pool of player-submitted clues to choose from, expanding the app’s replay value exponentially. We’d also like to see some extensive graphical improvements, as SetBreaker can be described as anything but eye-candy. A quick jaunt with a more professional design studio would bend the app out right, and potentially create a brand worthy of the iTunes Featured App spot itself.
As is, one can hardly fault SetBreaker for its price: The app clocks in at $0.99 in the App Store, which is a bargain to our ears, no matter how you slice. With incredible puzzling action that’s guaranteed to knock you off your block, we can’t recommend the app more. And with any luck, future updates will flesh out and expand the brilliant concept at the heart of SetBreaker, making it even more of a bargain in the process.
SetBreaker requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
