PDF Connoisseur: iPhone Written App Review
Yet another awesome PDF management app from Kdan Mobile Software hit our desk this week, and we’re itching to tell you about it. Why? Because PDF Connoisseur makes your documents talk, literally. Get ready for a new way to deal with docs on the go from a company that’s already proven they know what’s next in mobile document management.
As with the other titles we’ve come to love from Kdan Mobile Software, PDF Connoisseur will let you open and view almost any kind of file. It even supports ZIP and RAR file formats. A lot of the features we’ve liked in other apps appear here as well, like the app’s ability to password protect files and folders if you’d like, open big files at lightning speed and the option to turn files into PDF docs for further editing.
PDF Connoisseur also integrates with Dropbox, iDisk, GoogleDocs, Box.net, WebDAV Server and FTP for importing files, and is supposed to allow file imports via Wi Fi as well (more about that after the cut). It allows you to annotate, draw and create notes and shapes on docs, creating a mobile work environment with some serious power.
The most impressive addition to this app, what sets it apart from the others in this collection, is a really sweet text-to-speech ability. PDF Connoisseur can read your documents to you. That sounds like a multitasker’s best friend. The voice is pretty robotic, especially when compared with the (relatively) dulcet tones of Siri, but the app is also tri-lingual, in French, English and German. So we’re still impressed.

We weren’t crazy that PDF Connoisseur wouldn’t let us upload docs directly to our cloud services and we missed the PDF scanner feature. We also had an issue with the app’s Wi Fi connectivity. Normally the app would just offer up an address that would make sharing files a snap. This time it claims there was no connection, even though our iPad was definitely online.
Considering the high quality of the other apps from this developer, we’re sure these issues will be cleared up.
PDF Connoisseur definitely has some cool factor with its sweet text-to-speech feature. But considering the app is twice the price of others from the same dev, we thought it would do everything the cheaper versions do, or at least integrate with them. Unfortunately it doesn’t.
We still think PDF Connoisseur for iPad is really cool. If your job is data intensive and you want an easier way to read through documents when you’re mobile, this app could be worth its weight in gold.
PDF Connoisseur iPhone app requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
