MEZZ: iPhone App Video Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we tend to see a lot of new social networking applications. Typically, these are services that offer much the same functionality as existing sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) without bringing any real innovation to the table. Which is why Mezz, by the developer of the same name, really gets us going like it does. The app breathes a breath of fresh air into the realm of social media, personalizing the experience once more by offering content located in your area—potentially right next door. For our full thoughts on this innovative approach to sharing what’s hip and engaging, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
If you were to take the best aspects of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and FourSquare, and then roll them into one blissfuly simple application, you would have a fairly close approximation of Mezz. The app offers elements of each, only with a streamlined approach and local emphasis. For example, Mezz allows its users to take photo snapshots of anything going on around them, and then post it to a public wall. It’s worth noting that there are no private walls in Mezz, as in Facebook, encouraging users to interact with strangers near their location. Once a photo or status has been uploaded, other Mezz users can like it, favorite it, add a comment, or even follow the poster. All in all, this level of social encouragement creates a friendly network of people adding cool and interesting content to the public mindset.
Our only complaint with the application, in fact, is its regional basis: At the time of this posting, Mezz really only supports San Francisco and New York. Users not located in these areas can still view and post content, but the majority of the populous posting images and content to the stream are found in these dual locations. Hopefully, as time progresses and updates roll along, this will change, especially as Mezz continues to gain devotees.
Design and Layout
Another mark in Mezz’ favor is its absolutely jaw-dropping design. We loved the simplicity of the navigational tabs held along the bottom of the application. These allowed us to easily jump between our personal feed, the live photo wall, and the share function. If you were wondering, the integrated camera behaves beautifully, and we had no hang-ups with its performance. Likewise, we had no problems adding comments, liking posts, or adding our own material. All in all, Mezz is gorgeously designed, easy to use, and rock-solid in terms of functionality.
Best of all, Mezz is completely free in the App Store, making it an incredible bargain, to boot. If you’re looking for a regionally located and community-driven social networking experience, there’s really no competition to Mezz available in the App Store. The title is a brilliant example of iOS innovation, and as such, we’re giving it a full four and a half stars, as well as our hearty recommendation.
Mezz requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
