Localyzer: iPhone Written App Review
The things our iPhones can do with GPS are simply amazing. Now you can keep track of the time you spend at predefined locations simply by setting up the Localyzer iPhone app from iCarTel Team, a tracking app with a sophisticated reporting system perfect for workers on the go.
Localyzer lets you set up predefined zones using Google Maps technology. Then the app runs quietly in the background, tracking your every move. Any time you enter or leave a predefined location zone the app records it. You don’t have to do anything; there are no buttons to push or alerts to respond to. It’s automated tracking at its best.
The app creates a chart of time spent by location and you can choose to view the results either in a bar graph or a pie chart. View results for one week, two weeks, one month, three months, six months or a year for a quick look at how your week went or an expansive view of the past year’s time.
It’s definitely an interesting concept. Localyzer is an ideal utility for tracking someone’s movements via their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, making it quite the snoopers’ friend. On the other side of the spectrum this app will be really useful for business people. Instead of writing down the time you spend working with certain clients or visiting specific businesses, let the app keep track of it for you. It may also help businesses verify employee movements during the day. A handy reporting feature can export results via email with a single touch for optimal convenience.
Unfortunately, we had one big problem with the Localyzer iPhone app. It didn’t track our movements. We had the app installed for two days with a few defined locations entered. Not only did the app fail to track and record a single movement to our predefined locations, even though we’re running the latest version of iOS 5 on an iPhone 4, it also deleted every saved address if we ever force closed the app. There is no help file for the app, but we assumed that entering and saving addresses to the locations tab was all we needed to do to get going. Yet there wasn’t a single entry in our location history.
After verifying that the app was indeed running and displays current use of our iPhone’s GPS, we tested it again and had the same problem. On the up side even though the app description says it might drain battery strength because of constant GPS usage, the app only used a moderate amount of juice. So it’s not a battery fryer.
The idea behind Localyzer is really very good, especially for businesses. The price tag is attractive (it’s just $1.99) and the app layout is sleek and intuitive. We really hope that whatever fluke kept the app from functioning correctly on our iPhone is resolved quickly because the app has potential.
Localyzer iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
