HOT Culture: iPhone Written App Review
The new HOT Culture iPhone app by SID On celebrates the artistic achievements of the Polish people and plugs users in to the latest exhibits, works and multimedia projects from them around the world. All this art and literature is displayed in a breathtaking format in this free app from the government’s Adam Mickiewicz Institute. If you’re ready to celebrate the cultural heritage and brilliant future of the Polish people, this app simply cannot be missed.
HOT Culture has three main application counterparts, a knowledge base full of detailed articles on Polish literature, visual arts, film, music and theater, a multimedia gallery with picture galleries and video clips highlighting projects old and new, and a calendar that can help you keep abreast of the latest exhibits and events involving Polish artists.
As part of the Cultural Programme of the Polish EU Presidency, the app is just one piece of a six month cultural celebration that has taken place all over the world. Much of the app’s content links directly to the initiative’s website, culture.pl, for even more information about the amazing work being done by Polish artists around the world. The app can be enjoyed fully in both Polish and English, although sometimes the art transcends language.
We fell in love with the HOT Culture app’s sleek honeycomb design instantly. Not only is the main menu simple yet artfully designed and easy to use, the separate sections of the app are equally elegant. The calendar interface was a standout in the app. Each day is represented by a hexagon. One simply taps the date to see a list of photos and event descriptions of the day’s Polish-centric events around the world.
While the content is stunning and the cultural celebration admirable, the HOT Culture app can be a little frustrating at times. More than once the app required us to perform a lengthy update when it was opened. This update took some minutes, even with an extremely fast Wi-Fi connection. If it had been a brief check for updates it might have been understandable. But this app performed the initial info download and it was quite frustrating.
Once the information is loaded all of the app’s sections function perfectly. The multimedia files display beautifully on an iPhone or the iPad and video clips played seamlessly.
This free app is inspiring and delightfully educational. If you’re Polish or simply have a love for culture and art, it’s a treasure trove of information. Consider it an extremely well-crafted Polish primer. An app this beautiful is a gift to be treasured.
HOT Culture iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
