Fantasy Defense: iPhone Written App Review
We love a good tower defense app here at The iPhone App Review, so we were obviously thrilled when Fantasy Defense from developer PLAYBEAN came across our desks. This game packs a lot of action into a compact package jazzed up with a splash of Japanese style cartoon graphics. If you’re looking for a game to get lost in for hours on end, we’ve got you covered in our iPhone app review of Fantasy Defense.
Like all good tower defense games, in Fantasy Defense it is your job to rally the troops, placing them strategically to handle wave after wave of evil monsters as they try to storm the castle. The castle itself has some HP, so a few of them can get past your defenses without it causing too much strain on your kingdom. But watch out, if 20 or more make it past your carefully cultivated armies it’s curtains.
There’s a certain element of RPG to Fantasy Defense thanks to an intro video and a constant stream of updates and equipment options for heroes and unites. But don’t be fooled, the gameplay is all tower defense. There are three basic classes of fighters, warriors, archers and wizards. Not only can you upgrade a unit during the game, you can also increase their base stats by using points you earn for each level. The same goes for your hero, who has a special attack move. Like we said, this game is extremely customizable.
The game is broken up into five different map zones, and each zone has ten stages to defeat. Each stage has at least 20 waves of attacking monsters. So you can see how Fantasy Defense quickly becomes a long form game. Unless you have ten minutes we wouldn’t suggest it as a pick up style game.
Layout & Design:
Most of the games menus and interfaces are organized into a village. You’ll tap the correct building to launch the associated menu. During the game you drag and drop units from a list on the right to open spaces on the level. Gameplay is decidedly 2D, but the quality and variety of the graphics are pretty good. It’s not a horrible sophisticated game but there’s good work here.
The load screens and certain special attacks performed by your hero have their own unique anime style graphic design. We’re talking busty lasses and big weapons. These images are not exactly inappropriate, but we wouldn’t suggest handing the game to a little kid, all the same.
For such a busy, feature intense game, Fantasy Defense plays very smoothly. It works like a dream with iOS 5 and we did not experience any force closes or errors while playing this game rather extensively.
At $2.99, Fantasy Defense is a quality investment for your iPhone. This app is fun, addictive, versatile and colorful. One of our only complaints is that the long form game play makes it a long grind to gain access to different areas of the game. And when that’s one of the only problems we find with a game, you know it’s pretty good.
Fantasy Defense iPhone app requires iOS 3.1.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
