Do Date: iPhone App Written Review

iOS 5 brought a lot of quality changes to our iPhone’s software, including several features we feel should have been added to the mix at the very first launch. One of these included lock screen notifications, a feature we now can’t live without, but previously would have shot a clown for. However, not everything about the added excitement is smooth sailing. If you’re looking for a convenient way to remind yourself of upcoming events from your lock screen and notifications bar, there’s no better way—or other way—than with Do Date, by developer Law On My Phone. The app patches hefty holes left behind by the lads at Cupertino, and with a friendly price, to boot!

Concept and Functionality

The idea behind Do Date is simple, though sadly not already present in iOS: How much more efficient would your to do manager be if you could post reminders about upcoming dates to both your notifications center and your lock screen? In our minds, quite a bit more! With that in mind, Do Date allows you to speedily fashion dates and events in your future, which the app then appends to both locations. These reminders will remain in place until moved, and are updated daily. Each comes with a running timer to tell you just how long you have before the event takes place, and at midnight every day, these reminders are updated to more accurately reflect the march of time. All in all, it’s a smoothly functional way to remind yourself of important happenings,

Design and Layout

We can hardly fault Do Date for its design or looks, especially as both are so simple. Adding a new event is as quick as tapping the plus sign along the top, or clicking the “Add Date” tab along the bottom control panel. Likewise, the interface itself makes touch controlling your reminders a breeze. We especially appreciated the option to delete our reminders with the classic swipe and click method. However, we do wish the app came with a bit more. As Do Date only fills a hole, now, we’d like to see it expand that hole’s functionality. We’d love having multicolored notes, or customized reminders: Specialized notes for birthdays, holidays, etc. The skies are the limit, and as Do Date is the only app worth considering, the developers have a lot of wiggle room to work with.

Overall Value

Best of all, considering Do Date is only a dollar in the App Store, it will hardly break the bank to download and test drive. You’ll hardly even break a sweat! At the end of the day, if you’re like us, and have been waiting for this functionality, it’s time to go ahead and call the hunt off. Do Date does all we ask of it—and more—and we can only assume future updates will play with the concept to perfection.

Do Date for iPhoneDo Date requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
