Coloring Christmas: iPhone Video App Review
What better way to get into the holiday spirit than with a little creative coloring? The new Coloring Christmas app from Weiner Family Studios makes creating beautiful holiday scenes a fun and easy task with a simplified coloring interface and wide variety of seasonal scenes.
The Coloring Christmas iPhone app utilizes fill style coloring. This style makes coloring much easier, and creates much quicker results. For this reason, the Coloring Christmas app is ideal for little children or older children with learning disabilities who may find more traditional style coloring a bit difficult. It’s nice that the app is simple to use, but we wish it at least had an option to color and draw the old fashioned way, because kids sure love to doodle.
This small criticism aside, we love Coloring Christmas. This is the kind of seasonal app it’s easy to recommend. Not only can kids choose from a wide range of fill colors, they can use fun holiday patterns the same way for really interesting pictures. The app allows users to color scenes as many times as they choose. A save function puts any work you do in a gallery, for easy picture comparisons. You can also export colorful creations from the app to your camera roll for easy sharing and printing.
A pinch to zoom function, unlimited undo button and a few hidden surprises round out this festive holiday application. We think the creative possibilities are pretty magical.
Coloring Christmas is a universal app. While it’s designed to work on iOS screens big and small, we love it best on the iPad, where kids have plenty of room to see their work come to life. As far as the UI goes it is pretty simple, just touch a color or pattern, then start tapping the screen. Wherever you touch, that block is filled with the pre-selected hue.
However, accessing all the patterns and hues is a bit more complicated. You have to touch and hold a color to open the full menu of options, then tap the one you want, then start coloring. The touch and hold is a little rough for the tiniest of fingers, so you might need to help set the buttons to their favorites.
Otherwise the app is great. A collapsible arrow hides the save and export options, and a really fun trick can be unlocked if you tap the snowflake.
Users can expect updates to this app throughout the Christmas holiday season. That means Coloring Christmas is a really good value, especially with the reduced price of $.99 through December 18. That’s less then you’d spend on a coloring book and a set of crayons, and the app is much less messy and easier to share from. We think Coloring Christmas is a wonderful addition to the holiday app lineup on our devices, and highly recommend it to families with children of all ages looking for a little holiday cheer.
Coloring Christmas iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
