uTales: iPhone App Written Review

uTales iPad App Review

Reviewed by Valerie Lauer

The popular online picture book community uTales AB recently launched a set of stellar iOS apps, conveniently called uTales. Now uTales’ extensive collection of kid friendly storybooks can go wherever you do, and won’t cost you a dime.

Whether you’re already a uTales member, or are looking for a great new source of wonderful stories to share with your family, our iPad app review has all the details about this exciting new world of tales.

Features:

Fueled by the creative talents of more than 1,000 children’s books writers and illustrators, the uTales iPad app connects your family to a nearly limitless supply of picture books.

That’s because the stories in uTales are written by uTales creators, fellow members who participate in a global educational initiative through this awesome app. As long as they keep creating new eBooks, you’ll be able to read them.

Users do have to create a uTales log in, something the app does not facilitate. That means you must visit uTales.com to sign up, then use your log in information to access your bookshelf, and the rest of the uTales library.

We did not see a search feature in the uTales iPad app. So saving your favorites to your bookshelf will be a big time saver. To add a book to your bookshelf, simply rate the tale, giving it at least four out of five stars.

While the app might be missing a few helpful features, the content and quality of the application are amazing. Currently the app has 148 beautiful stories for your family to enjoy. That’s a lot of bang for one little app.

Layout & Design:

The uTales iPad app makes full use of your device’s colorful display. Stories are bright and easy to read. They do not expand to a full screen view, which is unfortunate and we hope uTales adds this feature in the future.

On the app’s main page you can scroll through an endless list of books, and choose titles by tapping on their colorful covers. Each story has a brief synopsis and an option to rate the book on the main page. Your child can enjoy the story by flipping the pages with a swipe gesture, or tapping the arrow in the lower right-hand corner.

Access to your bookshelf is also located on the app’s main page, in a conveniently located bottom tab. Currently there are not any options to remove books from this list from the application. But you can share titles via email, and any audio in the books is supported.

Value:

Downloading uTales and becoming a member is completely free. Your account comes with 15 days of free access to the entire uTales library. After that you can either extend your free membership by inviting friends to enjoy the app, or purchase unlimited access for a onetime fee of $9.99.

This app is amazing, and sure to be a big hit with families around the world. It is universal, meaning although it is optimized for iPad, it will work just fine on your iPhone or iPod touch. Developers promise frequent updates, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for the uTales iPad app. Get this app. Your family will thank you.
