Llama Llama Red Pajama: iPhone App Written Review
We won’t be shy about this: We’ve seen more than our fair share of children’s applications for the iPhone and iPad. Suffice it to say, we know the market. That being said, even in our jaded state we can’t help but be wowed by Penguin Books’ Llama Llama Red Pajama. The app takes reading to new heights on the iPad, and with a plethora of cute animations, brilliant storytelling, and intuitive controls, we couldn’t be happier with the title. For our full thoughts on this stellar app for children, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
In terms of raw functionality, Llama Llama Red Pajama isn’t much different than any other children’s application on the iPad. The title very strictly resembles a traditional print production, allowing the user to slide from page to page, enjoying the writing as they go. However, Penguin has introduced a few new elements which we’re quite fond of. First and foremost, we appreciated the pages section, which allows the reader to select any page in the book and skip directly there. We also found the Spanish language option particularly useful: Though we don’t speak the language ourselves, we imagine many of our readers are very grateful for the bilingual support.
Aside from that, where Llama Llama Red Pajama shines is in its execution: Every thing just works. The read to me function performed flawlessly, allowing us to ease off and let the kids manage the entertainment. Page turning was seamlessly, and the heap of entertaining animations cranked along smoothly. All in all, we were simply floored with Llama Llama Red Pajama’s polish and shine. We’d expect no less from a major publisher, but it’s still refreshing to see an app aimed at children that doesn’t cut corners or slash features for the sake of simplicity.
Graphics and Animations
And, of course, the animations and artwork are absolutely top-notch. If you’ve been a longtime fan of the Llama Llama series, then you already know what to expect. For those less initiated, artist and writer Anna Dewdney creates brilliant vibrant artwork and loving stories that little ones tend to fawn over. All of that has been ported here with particular taste, especially in the realm of animations. Each page sparks to life with the touch of a button, creating an endlessly engaging atmosphere that will keep even the shortest of attention spans on rails.
Clocking in at $4.99 in the App Store, Llama Llama Red Pajama is certainly pricy for an iOS application. However, considering that’s less than half the cost of a hardcover edition of the same title, the app begins to look more like a bargain. Add to that a whole host of lovely animations, engaging artwork, and professional finish, and we feel like Llama Llama Red Pajama is quite the catch for any iPad-owning parent. Because of that, the app earns our full recommendation.
Llama Llama Red Pajama requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
