HushBaby: iPhone App Written Review
Sleep is one hot commodity, especially for new parents. Now there’s a way to help your little one stay asleep so you can collect some precious Z’s, or just a few moments of peace and quiet, for yourself with the HushBaby iPhone app from Uri Kadushin.
This unique parenting app allows you to sooth your baby with a custom recording of your own voice for optimal results. Simply set up the app near your sleeping little one (suggested distance is 3 – 10 feet), and the HushBaby app utilizes your iPhone’s sensitive speaker to monitor your baby’s noise.
When a preselected volume threshold is met, the app springs into action, playing your recording and effectively soothing a fussy little one.
This is definitely a new one for us here at The iPhone App Review. Instead of depending on generic white noise sounds or lullabies, the HushBaby app allows your message to be personal, in a voice your baby is sure to recognize.
Will this app defuse a full-on tantrum or work in every situation? No. But it is a smart idea and might help your child (and you) get a bit more much needed rest.
The HushBaby iPhone app is pleasantly customizable. The most obvious example being the actual recording. There are no preloaded tracks here, so the soothing sounds will be unique to you and your baby’s needs.
In the app’s settings menu you can choose the noise level that triggers the app with a sliding scale. Each threshold comes with an explaination at the bottom of the screen (whimpering, whining, crying, etc.) and the app lets you know the exact decibel of noise it requires to react.
The hushed soothing track gives you the same option. You can control the level the recording plays at in the app or by utilizing your iPhone’s volume control. Developers (and I) suggest turning off your ringer and other alert sounds to avoid startling your little one during the night.
Layout & Design:
The last thing busy parents need is an overly complex app to fight with while they’re trying to get the little one to sleep. Thankfully, HushBaby is refreshingly simple, and manages to be cute without pushing the envelope.
You will navigate the app’s settings and turn on the HushBaby listening function by touching controls that look like baby blocks. Tasteful baby blocks, of course. Nothing garish, pink or blue here. Just a simple, responsive set of graphics in soothing, muted tones.
If you have iOS 4.2 or over, HushBaby and all the possible peace that it brings will run you $1.99. The app is optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch, but will function completely on the iPad as well.
Frankly, this app is a bit of a gamble. There’s no way of knowing if your particular child will react to recordings when it begins to fuss. Still, the price is right and if you’re struggling with getting your child to sleep it could be a life saver.
HushBaby iPhone app requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
