Green Screen Animation Studio: iPhone App Written Review
One of the coolest things about iOS is its seemingly endless creative potential. Of all the apps we take a look at, the ones that get our goat the most are the ones that let us do the content creation. We love anything that lets us draw a little cartoon, or shoot a mini-movie, or even get our groove thing on. And in a sense, Green Screen Animation Studio, by developer epocfield, satisfies all of our creative itches in one smooth go. The app takes a bit of initiative to fine-tune, but once accomplished, users can create truly engaging pieces of stop-motion art. Best of all, the two dollar price-tag is spot-on for the functionality. We’re quite enamored with the app, but we’d feel better if you looked below to see our full review on Green Screen Animation Studio.
Concept and Functionality
In summary, Green Screen Animation Studio allows users to create deceptively simple stop-motion movies using nothing but their iPhone and their imaginations. The app accomplishes this by acting as a camera, as well as an onion-paper cheat sheet. Users snap a picture of their target, and then overlay their first photo over another, slightly different shot. This process continues until, eventually, the user has compiled a massive amount of images. The app then takes these pictures and runs them together in accordance to the specified frames per second. The end result is a stop-motion movie created with nothing but an iPhone and a little bit of a time investment.
However, there’s also a pretty stellar green screen element to the app. Users can define up to five colors to be replaced with a chromakeyed background of their choice. In other words, if you have a green screen or flat background on hand, you can not only create stop-motion brilliance, but special effects brilliance, as well.
Design and Layout
All in all, we couldn’t be happier with how easy Green Screen Animation Studio is to use. We had no trouble setting up our film parameters, and then snapping movies into existence. We especially appreciated the onion-paper function, which vastly simplified the process of steadying and lining up a shot. The fact that films can be exported straight to Facebook, Twitter, or DropBox is appreciated as well. All in all, everything you need to exercise your creative muscle can be found here in abundance.
Overall Value and Fun
At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a convenient and energizing way to create stop-motion movies from your iPhone, there’s no better option than Green Screen Animation Studio. The two dollar price-tag makes the app an absolute steal, while the smooth design and excellent functionality makes it a blast to use. It may take some finagling to get used to, but if your’e willing to work, your own imagination is ultimately what’s showcased.
Green Screen Animation Studio requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
