Ben’s Virtues: iPhone App Written Review
It’s a bit early in the year for New Year’s resolutions, however it’s never too late to polish your actions and address general moral ineptitude. That’s right, now you can track your good (and bad) behavior right on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch thanks to Ben’s Virtues, an app from Reason Interactive that champions the virtues of Benjamin Franklin in a yearly rotation.
Ready to exercise moderation, humility and 11 other worthy restraints? Tis the season to be virtuous here at The iPhone App Review. We hope you approve.
Temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity and humility. These are the virtues that one Benjamin Franklin pondered during an 80-day voyage at sea. According to Ben’s virtuous plan, he would pay special attention to practicing each of these virtues individually for a week’s time, creating a 13-week cycle of general goodness.
Each time Mr. Franklin failed to uphold his end of the moral bargain, he would mark his failure on the corresponding day in his virtue chart. The goal being to make it four whole circuits of the chart (a full year) with nary a transgression.
It’s a lofty goal for anyone, and an interesting social experiment. The Ben’s Virtues iPhone app is simple. The main screen is dominated by a modern day replica of Franklin’s chart with a header proudly proclaiming the current week’s virtue. If you fail to uphold the virtue a la mode, simply tap the day in question, marking it with a white dot.
The app does contain a brief description of its inspiration and of each virtue, along with a suggested reading by way of a Benjamin Franklin autobiography. And that’s all she wrote. It could definitely use a couple of extras, an option to upload results to Facebook, perhaps, or a journaling feature?
Layout & Design:
The developers honored Franklin’s virtues even in design. In the name of order and moderation, the Ben’s Virtues app is clean and simply designed. It is extremely easy to navigate and use, without any frivolous animation or advertisements. Utilizing a selection of tabs you may navigate between the chart, a description of each virtue, the app’s straightforward instructions and a general information tab.
Indeed, we were hard pressed to find any fault with the application’s design. And we mean it. After all, today’s virtue is sincerity: think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly.
In a rousing testament to frugality, the Ben’s Virtues iPhone app can join your collection of less worthy apps for free. That’s quite a value for an app this solidly designed. However, the true worth of this app may be in the results we see from using it. We highly suggest downloading Ben’s Virtues.
Ben’s Virtues iPhone app requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
