Trolls have had a pretty bad rap the past century or so. Now it seems they’ve earned it in the Troll Blaster iPhone app from eMobiSoft, where the trolls have come out of hiding and this time they are after world domination.

Think you have what it takes to save the world from snarling trolls? Then you’ll dig our iPhone app review of Troll Blaster.

Choose your weapon wisely in the Troll Blaster iPhone app. In this slingshot style game the goal is to destroy all the marauding trolls on each level using the weapons cache at the top of the screen.

Working with in-game physics you choose strategically from four different projectile weapons then hurl them with precision and power at the trolls.

Naturally these trolls are crafty, hiding behind walls made of different materials and mocking you with their evil troll laughter. There’s definitely an element of strategy to this game. Each projectile interacts with the structure materials differently, and some of the trolls can be pretty difficult to get.

Twenty-seven unlockable achievements and global score integration via Game Center add a whole other level of fun to this addictive app.

The Troll Blaster iPhone follows the grand tradition of other games we’ve looked at here at The iPhone App Review, such as Angry Frogs and Catch The Fly, and the penultimate game Angry Birds. But the story line, unique choose-your-weapon interface and crazy troll sound board set it apart.

User Interface:

It’s simple to navigate between numbered levels by scrolling through groups of 16. If the app expands they might want to do a little more organization, but for now it works just fine.

During game play there are no annoying ads, and weapon selection, pause and a score tracker are all located at the top of the screen where they are minimally invasive.

All in all, Troll Blaster has a smart design that’s easy to use and uncomplicated to navigate. There’s nothing revolutionary about this UI, but it is solid.

Graphics & Design:

Clean cartoon graphics and a rugged troll theme are simple yet interesting in the Troll Blaster iPhone app. It’s worth mentioning that this app functions perfectly on the iPhone and the iPad, with optimized iPad graphics included. The main highlight of each level is the troll defense structure, with relatively boring background images that do not detract from the game.

I appreciate a few design touches that make the game easier to play, such as the health bar above each troll that lets you know how much damage you need to do and the power bar to help you gauge the distance of each shot.

The in-game physics are also impressive and extremely accurate, with a wide variety of materials that have different reactions and the power of gravity generally being on your side.

Troll Blaster also earns some points for only costing $.99. There are 64 high quality, progressively difficult levels in this app. No hidden costs or unlock purchases needed. And there are more levels on the way.

If you’re addicted to projectile destruction games, or just looking for a new distraction to sink your teeth into, consider giving the Troll Blaster iPhone app a shot. It’s a lot of fun.
