There’s no need to compute numbers on a boring standard calculator any more. The Old Calculator iPad app from JUUQ Mobile turns your modern device into a turn of the century calculator, replete with classic charm.
Here at TheiPhoneAppReview.com we’ve seen our share of calculator apps. While the Old Calculator iPad app might not be the most advanced example of iPad calculating, it might be the most unique.
Individual buttons and switches represent the standard numbers and functions of this calculator. The app simulates a desk calendar, most popular in the early 1900s. The app features ten standard digits, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, a clear function, negative number feature, and a decimal point.
These calculators were quite unique for their time. They performed addition and subtraction in single operations, much like calculators of today. Multiplication and division calculations were actually reached through repeated addition.
Utilizing a realistic set of mechanical sound effects and animated mobile switches, the Old Calculator iPad app give users an authentic visual of what it might have been like to use one of these classic machines.
Layout & Design:
From the display’s brass bolts to the weathered wooden background, the Old Calculator iPad app simply oozes period charm. Each knob and button is completely classic. Even the numbers are in a stylish old fashioned font.
Since Old Calculator is an iPad only app, we expected it to be landscape and portrait friendly. Unfortunately the calculator does not make use of the iPad’s ample screen in landscape mode. To get the most out of it use it in portrait mode.
Despite this slight design oversight, Old Calculator is still a fascinating piece of design work with a lot of special touches.
The range of functions in Old Calculator is definitely limited. If you are after an extremely basic set of computing functions it will be a perfect and interesting choice. However, it is missing some basic functions we might take for granted, such as a percentage function or square root button. Certainly this is in keeping with the original design of the machine, but it does limit the app’s practical application.
This homage to classic calculating can be your’s for $.99 by downloading the app from iTunes. The Old Calculator iPad app is interesting and does complete basic computations quite well. If your needs are simple, or you want a steam punk style calculator to show off to your pals, Old Calculator might be just what you are looking for. After all, it only costs a buck.
