Ah, iOS 5! We waited forever for your gilded release, and now that the iPhone 4S has been revealed, you’re all we’ve got left to cling to! Not that that’s a bad thing, though: With apps like Live Lock Screen, by mix1009, appearing on the radar, we couldn’t be happier to have you around. On that note, if you’re looking for a new way to stretch the limitations of your latest software update, as well as your iPhone’s capabilities in general, Live Lock Screen is a cheap, efficient, and beautiful way to do so. For our full thoughts on this latest-generation application, check below!

Concept and Functionality

Live Lock Screen is yet another app designed to, almost entirely, correct yet another limitation oversight in the way iOS works. The app allows users to define a lock screen image, and then change it along a time gap of their choosing. This time difference ranges from as little as one second per image rotation, or one hour per swap. This provides for a lot of customization, as well as battery security for the overly concerned.

The app throws in a few other extra incentives to keep things fresh, as well: This includes a random function that shuffles through photos willy-nilly, returning whatever it grabs first, per swap. There’s also the option to define a certain photo album to pull from, which is a nice touch.

That being said, we can’t help but clamor for more! We know the app is fresh on the scene, and had to race to supply this functionality, but why not include Facebook integration, or TwitPic pulling? We’d love to peep our friend’s photos Android-style from our new live, iOS-powered lock screen. The lack of such functionality is hardly a deal-breaker, but we certainly hope it arrives in the next round of updates.

Design and Layout

Live Lock Screen keeps things real simple, offering only two different panels to work with. There’s the fake lock screen that models how the actual thing will work, as well as a preferences pane where all the handy features can be tweaked to the user’s satisfaction. We liked this simplicity, as well as the smoothness of the slide to stop, or slide to start bar. All in all, it couldn’t be simpler, and we don’t believe the app should change a thing—aside from better Web integration, that is!

Overall Value

Here’s the straight skinny as we see it: Live Lock Screen offers a functionality that didn’t exist two days ago. It’s also only $0.99 in the App Store. For that reason alone, you owe it to yourself to give the application a go. Is it the most feature-rich app we’ve ever seen? No, but it certainly rocks our socks, anyway.

Live Lock ScreenLive Lock Screen requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
