Back in the day, we were rather large fans of a certain space faring title called Vendetta Online. For a modest fee per month, users could parade around the galaxy, blasting enemies, collecting missions, earning cash, and upgrading their armada to epic proportions. Since that golden era, there have been other games like Eve Online that have furthered the concept, and now, thanks to developer Sunfish Studio Limited, all the same action can be had on the iPhone and iPad with Galaxy Pirate Adventure.
Concept and Gameplay
As mentioned before, Galaxy Pirate Adventure is almost directly a port of the space-age action available in titles like Eve Online: That sounds like it might be a bad thing, but honestly, we can’t get over how bloody cool the game is. Galaxy Pirate Adventure allows players to start their own spaceship armada, requiring them to take on various missions and tasks assigned at pirate hubs around the galaxy. These missions come in a variety of formats, and each does its job to spread out the some 40 odd hours of gameplay held here.
We have no doubts that the dedicated player could spend several days hammering out new missions, collecting the extensive rewards, and upgrading his modest armada into a heavy fleet. The combat system is even analogous to modern MMORPG titles on the desktop, while the game itself supports a nearly limitless number of ships and weapons: The developers tout 37 hand-crafted space ships that also come combined with some 200 equipment pieces and another 200 crew members. All in all, there’s a lot of reason to get to blasting, as the various effects and bonuses floating about form one huge carrot on a stick. It’s bloody great gameplay, and if you’re at all a fan of the rogue-style endless dungeon that these universe games usually are, you simply have to give Galaxy Pirate Adventure a test drive.
Design and Graphics
This concept, of course, has been attempted before on the iPhone and iPad, however. So what sets Galaxy Pirate Adventure apart from its competitors? The absolutely killer graphics, that’s what! This thing looks great on the iPad’s enhanced screen, and with flawless playback, we had one hell of a time blasting baddies with our cannons. Sure, it doesn’t look nearly as good as Eve Online does on the desktop, but for a mobile title, Galaxy Pirate Adventure is certainly raising a bar. The fully 3D environment is ace for immersion, and we love the rich, Phantasy Star-esque motif that’s carried throughout.
Galaxy Pirate Adventure is pricy, clocking in at $4.99 in the App Store. However, if you love the open-range style space game, complete with pirate missions, incredible graphics, and nearly limitless gear combinations, you have nothing to lose by spending the extra dime. Galaxy Pirate Adventure is a gem in the rough, and you owe yourself at least a few hours with it.
Galaxy Pirate Adventure requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
