We’re a little bit more than just suckers for touch-based arcade games. It’s the winners like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds that absolutely get our goat, and with our predilections in mind, we’re proud to recommend yet another finger-oriented arcade gem for the iPad, Fruits Collector HD (AngryOrange). The app offers a superb amount of mini-game style fun, and at the perfect price to match. For our full thoughts on this fresh-faced physics app for the iPad, check below after the break!
Concept and Gameplay
At first blush, Fruits Collector HD appears to be nothing more than your average Fruit Ninja clone: The game has players facing a tree full of various fruits, each of which must be poked, stabbed, or slashed during its descent to the ground via handy gravity. However, this is only the topical ointment to Fruits Collector HD’s deeper itch. The game sports not just one fruit slashing mode but a whopping four, each with a unique set of rules and specialties. For instance, there’s a time-based arcade mode that sees just how many fruit pieces the player can hit before the timer runs out. There’s also a hit-count mode in which fallen fruit counts against the player’s lives. Add to that an endless drop mode and a mini-game ridden “Short Rounds” option, and you’re looking at a whopping amount of fruity fun.
That being said, we do wish the app came with a bit more in the fruit department. As much as we love the various game mechanics, there’s only a handful of fruit types, and only two real varieties—there’s ripe and unripe fruit which are occasionally differentiated by point value. We feel there’s a lot more room for innovation here, with some kind of power-up included in the tree, or added to the mix with a combo bonus, a la Fruit Ninja. This isn’t a deal breaker, but as is, there’s a lot of wiggle room for further creativity.
Design and Graphics
Luckily, Fruits Collector HD brings to the table everything we like to see in an arcade application: There’s Game Center integration for our competitive desires, smooth touch physics in-game to goad us along, and more than enough game modes to tickle our pickle. We were pleasantly surprised with the graphics quality as well, which really fits the feel and motif of the whole game. All in all, its a tight package with a heaping helping of eye candy to keep the ball rolling.
Best of all, Fruits Collector HD is priced appropriately at the one dollar mark: Our favorite spot in the App Store. If you’re a fan of arcade games for the iPad, this one is your ticket home. Fruits Collector HD earns a full recommendation from us, and we guarantee it will fill more than a few minutes in the morning commute.
Fruits Collector HD requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
