Aeronauts: Quake In The Sky iPhone app by developer JCE, is the kind off iPhone title that makes our nostalgia drives kick into turbo mode. The game reminds us of the golden era of top-down dogfight simulators, a world in which Geometry Wars didn’t exist, and Star Fox was still the epitome of killer graphics. Ah, yes—those were the days! Considering Aeronauts is free in the App Store, those days are a little bit closer to home, and are at the ready for you to download and enjoy on your iPhone.
Concept and Gameplay
Our iPhone app review found that Aeronauts draws a lot of inspiration from those classic top-down flight simulators you use to see as a kid in the local pizza joint. Users control an aircraft that constantly zooms forward, smashing, careening, and spinning about wave after wave of oncoming baddie. The guns are always blazing, freeing up the user’s hands for other game aspects, like flight control.
Speaking of controls, there’s three different flight mechanics offered within Aeronauts: There’s a virtual joystick for the manually inclined, touch controls for those that want it, and—our favorite—tilting controls that make full use of the iPhone’s accelerometer. No matter how you go about flying your plane, though, Aeronauts is a blast to play, and we found the title particularly responsive, even in the heat of battle.
The game throws in all the amenities you’d expect, including a trove of unique enemies, lengthy levels, and copious power-ups. There’s also a boss fight at the conclusion of each stage, which made us just about wet our geeky drawers. In every possible sense, Aeronauts is a perfect arcade throwback, and we can’t get over how refreshing that is.
Design and Graphics
We were just as enthralled with Aeronauts’ graphics as were the actual gameplay. The title shines with a bit-graphic glory that, again, makes us get all glassy-eyed for days gone by. That being said, we might have liked to see a few more levels, as well as an extra plane or two. There’s an handful of new stages available for in-app purchase, but still: We’d appreciate a few more than three levels to play through before shelling out a couple bucks to keep the ball rolling. That being said, the stages themselves are quite lengthy, taking about five minutes at the least to steam through with mountains of action included in-between.
Aeronauts is free in the App Store: If there’s a better excuse to enjoy some classic arcade action, we haven’t got it. If you’re a fan of the genre, or just want a quick time waster to test drive, the app is your perfect storm. Aeronauts earns a full recommendation from us here at the iPhone App Review.
