We have to admit, we’re a bit puzzled—no pun intended—by 10Plus, a new puzzling iPhone app by developer PlayPieGames. We say we’re puzzled because the iPhone app is, as advertised, a truly unique puzzling experience for iOS. We haven’t seen anything quite like the title’s finger-sliding, numbers-based action, and we’re so intrigued by it we can hardly stop playing. That’s not to say the app is perfect (more on that in a second) but it’s a fair bet the iPhone app will be gaining traction right into the iTunes featured spot. Concept and Functionality
What 10Plus offers its players is a game board comprised of a series of various numbers. These numbers range from one to four, and must be arranged in a myriad of combinations to produce the number ten. The game is built around the concept that 1+2+3+4 is equal to ten. Likewise, other number arrangements, like 3+4+3 produce the same result. Players must find these number sets on the game board, and then highlight them with the single slide of a finger. There are bonuses for doing this quickly, as well as in larger chunks. If a five by four block of the board produces a multiple of ten, that’s fair game: This concept intrigued us to no end, and we couldn’t help but take the occasional, random stab at a big jackpot.
However, the game isn’t all fun and play: There’s a timer that keeps the player on their toes, and if an incorrect combination is attempted, a set number of seconds is dashed off the clock. Likewise, if a set works out for the better, a few more moments are added on. The larger the incorrect guess, the bigger the deduction. This seemed like a fair concept to us, and we found it really did a lot to liven up the gameplay.
Design and Layout
The game reminds us a lot of Japanese-oriented titles like Cooking Mama, as it offers a manga-inspired look with cute characters, entertaining graphics, and a pastel color palette. In fact, if 10Plus can be called anything, it’s lively. The title is absolutely chock full of engaging tweaks and quirks that bring everything from the game board to the intertextual menus to life. There’s a lot of eye candy, and we feel it perfectly compliments the spicy, up-beat gameplay. However, if you aren’t a fan of this cutesy art style, be warned: It comes in spades with 10Plus.
All in all, with a hefty multiplayer section and roughly a dozen single player levels, 10Plus is an absolute bargain, clocking in at $0.99. If you’re looking for a truly exciting puzzler for your morning commute, you have nothing to lose by giving 10Plus a test drive. We recommend it, and now if you’ll excuse us, we have some numbers to add.
10Plus requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
