Fragrance guru and game changer Thierry Mugler just launched the Thierry Mugler – Angel iPhone app with Clarins Fragrance Group. The iPhone app coincides with a new promotional campaign for Angel, but there’s a bit more to it.
In case you are unfamiliar with the fragrance, Angel created quite a stir when it was released in 1992. Now, nearly 20 years later, the brand is getting a bit of a makeover, thanks to their stellar new dream sequence iPhone app and a certain voluptuous lady named Eva Mendes.

In the Thierry Mugler – Angel iPhone app you will search the skies to select five unique stars out of 40 possible celestial bodies. Choose them at random, or try to capture your mood in the delicious terms. Are you drawn towards wild, danger and heat? Or are you more in a mood for blue, dancing and temptation?
There are more than 50 thousand possible star combinations to choose from. Once you pick your top five a celestial animation launches a customized dream sequence video. Set to unique music, the video is designed (according to the app) to give you a waking dream to match your mood.
It’s an ambitious idea, and the video images are quite exquisite. The Thierry Mugler – Angel app gets an A for artistic endeavor.
There is also a sneak peak video featuring the lovely Eva Mendes as she films an upcoming ad campaign for Angel. The app suggests an Angel fragrance based on your dream mood, helps you find local shopping opportunities via GPS, and contains some lush descriptions of Angel’s product line.
Unfortunately the only way to save your dreams is to share them via Facebook. The integration is a neat trick, but it would be nice to save videos on my iPhone too.
All the Thierry Mugler – Angel app’s features are wrapped in an ethereal UI that packs some serious shine. Fittingly, the brand’s signature star is the app’s theme. It’s all black backgrounds and heavenly bodies in blue. The effect is quite exciting.
The app’s navigation buttons are kept small and unobtrusive, since dreams and art are the focus here. That makes them a bit hard to access sometimes. I had to touch the screen several times to get buttons to respond.
A bit of clumsy handling aside, I am really impressed with the app’s design and UI.
If you’ve ever met an Angel fan, you know this app will simply thrill the perfume’s existing customer base. Angel devotees are usually vehement about their fragrance’s superiority. Non users will still appreciate the dreamy video medleys.
All the features of the Thierry Mugler – Angle iPhone app are free to download and enjoy via iTunes. The app is surprisingly tasteful for a marketing ploy and I quite enjoyed it. I may even stop to give Angel a second sniff next time I go shopping.
