Maui is Hawaii’s most popular travel destination, with good reason. From the pristine golf greens to the remote and enchanting Hana Highway, unlock unique tours and find your own special place on the Valley Isle with the Maui GPS Tour Guide iPhone app.
I wouldn’t dream of visiting somewhere as lush and diverse as Maui without a travel app. During my iPhone app review process it was easy to see why Maui GPS Tour Guide is an ideal choice for visitors.
Instead of chucking locals under the bus by aiming tourists at private land, the Maui GPS Tour Guide tells it like it is. If a spot is beautiful, the app will inevitably say so. However it also contains road closings and private property warnings.
That’s a pretty refreshing approach to traveling, and could keep you from an unfriendly run in with locals or the law.
In addition to this extremely balanced approach to tourism, the Maui GPS Tour Guide app has tons of useful tips about Maui, a research feature, vendor suggestions, and (you guessed it) GPS-based guided tours of each of the island’s regions, complete with pleasant audio and polite tips for getting the most out of your trip.
There is also an interactive map with fun icons to help you discover the best beaches, trails and more. However, there are no links to attraction websites, or contact numbers, addresses etc. A little extra data and links could have given the app something extra.
The majesty of Maui draws approximately 2.2 million visitors from around the world every year. Needless to say that means not every visitor is going to be in their coverage foot print. The Maui GPS Tour Guide iPhone app’s maps and details can be downloaded before leaving your coverage area, and used without a network connection.
You do have to enable GPS permissions for Maui GPS Tour Guide to function properly. That setting is easy adjusted by visiting your settings menu, tapping general and adjusting location services.
Other than that small reminder, the Maui GPS Tour Guide iPhone app functions perfectly. Photos and descriptions load without a hitch and the interactive map is quite responsive.
A basic download of the Maui GPS Tour Guide iPhone app gives you access to beach info, helpful tips and the attraction research portion of the app. The most interesting feature of the app, the guided GPS tours, costs extra.
Download each individually at $2.99 a pop, or, do the smart thing, and get all five guided tours for $7.99. While I dislike sneaky pricing structures in general, I do think that the app is still a good value. A good travel guide could cost $20 and take up precious room in your carry on. It’s also much cheaper than hiring a guide.
If you’re going to visit the lovely island of Maui, the Maui GPS Tour Guide iPhone app is definitely worth the investment.
Maui GPS Tour Guide iPhone app requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
