Livewell, by IntiumFive, provides a quick, convenient, and snappy way to journal your fishing conquests while in the field. Its robust feature set, simple interface, and superb cataloging capabilities make it a killer addition to your tackle box. The price is a bit high, and the app currently only supports freshwater angling, but Livewell is still a great value for the money. If you’re a fisherman and an iPhone owner, you owe it to yourself to give the iPhone app a go.
Concept and Functionality
Let’s face it: You likely already blog your every move with Twitter and Facebook, but when’s the last time you make a detailed catalog entry for that mammoth bass you caught last weekend? Livewell provides a quick and convenient way to track your catches, including a weight estimator that makes it a simple task to guess just how fat that big fish was.
When users want to input a new entry, they simply boot Livewell up, measure their fish, and then add the length (and girth, if needed) of the catch. In return, the app produces an estimated weight for that species. From there, users can complete their entry with a geotagged location—GPS functionality is fully supported here—and snap a photo to prove the weight estimate is accurate.
It’s a smooth operation, and with the option to edit every listing later, there’s an infinite amount of room for logging your angling exploits. That being said, users are required to stick to the included fresh water species if they want a weight estimate. This means there’s no support for saltwater fishing, a major drag for those that live near a coast and have never touched a lake or river. Likewise, users can enter a specific species tag to each entry, but there’s no automated drop-down list of common North American species. Smoothing this experience over would add a whole new level to the iPhone app, and it’s a shame the functionality isn’t there.
Design and Layout
Thankfully, Livewell looks fantastic on the iPhone’s Retina display. The app features a lot of bright reds and blues, making it easy to spot, especially when out by the water. Creating new entries is also a basic affair using the fill-in fields and tabbed species list.
There’s also an included in-app browser, which feels more like a late-thought addition than a major feature. The browser can be used to surf any site you please, but it might be more useful if it provided quick links to various fishing resources: Information about specific freshwater species would be a wonderful addition, not to mention a handy one for the new fisherman.
Complaints aside, Livewell is easily worth the $1.99 it costs in the App Store. This is a must-have for any iDevice fisherman, and will compliment a good day angling to the umpteenth degree.
Livewell requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
