The GemPang iPhone app from Bitplus combines addictive match gameplay, unique graphics and a little something extra for a stellar iPhone app experience. If you’re looking for a challenging new app with a lot of charm pay close attention to my iPhone app review of GemPang.
In the traditional form of matching games such as Bejeweled, in GemPang the idea is to collect matching monsters in the game board’s center pool called the Aquose. Match fast, pick up bonuses and earn mega points.
Speed is the name of the game. Go too slow and the board will fill up with water, and then it’s game over.
The tricky little monsters populating the game board in the GemPang iPhone app have a nasty habit of turning around. If they catch you trying to collect them they won’t budge, and you have to find another monster to plunge into the Aquose.
You can also tap multiple matching game pieces and drag them together. Tap bonus icons and then a monster, drag both to the center for bonuses.
It took me a minute to figure out this game. There is a help menu with graphics, but it’s obvious that whoever developed this app wasn’t a native English speaker. I suggest playing for a minute then rereading the help menu. It makes more sense that way.
Graphics & Design:
I really like the graphics in the GemPang iPhone app. Each creature is unique, interesting and has hilarious facial expressions. The game is bright and vibrant, definitely giving the app a festive feel.
Even the transitional screens for pausing, saving and restarting the games are intricately designed, with an industrial motif. I think I like the graphics more than the game, but maybe that’s because I haven’t ranked on the global score board yet.
For any good iPhone game, the UI needs to be a fine balance of easy game play and minimalist controls. The GemPang iPhone app definitely hits the mark here as well. I barely noticed the in game controls, which consist of one small pause button and a progress bar tucked at the top of the screen.
The rest of the app is also easy to use, with simple tap navigation to settings, help and info on the app’s main page.
Downloading GemPang from iTunes costs $.99. That’s a pretty fair price for an amusing yet simple game that functions correctly. It’s also nice to play this kind of app without any ads.
So go ahead, pony up a buck and use GemPang to fill up those boring moments when you’re looking for a challenging, distracting app. You’ll be glad you did.
GemPang iPhone app requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
